New Build PC Won't Boot

Hello,

This is my first PC Build and I'm stuck. I have put together all the hardware, when I pressed the power button for the first time the CPU fan did a half turn and the computer did not power up.

I have a Via PC2500e motherboard with a Via C7-D CPU.

1GB RAM
an old 2.5" SATA HDD that I got out of a laptop. Nothing wrong with it as far as I can tell. works fine in an external enclosure.

Any ideas fro what I should do (or what I could have done wrong)?

Right, got past that stage. Now the fan on the CPU is going and I can hear the hard drive but my monitor gets no signal. What should my next steps be?

have you checked all the cables and power etc to your components. if you have a pci-e graphics card that requires external power, is it plugged in. If you have multiple display outputs is it conencted to the right port?
