Not where I'd like to be
I thought I'd share my soon to be new build. Nothing is set in stone and any suggestions, recommendations, will be welcome.

Currently I have

E8400 @ 3.00GHz
ASUSTek P5QL-E
4gb DDR2 ram
Radeon HD 5770 Vapour-X
500gb Samsung HDD
Coolermaster case of some description

I built this a couple of years ago adding the 5770 last year sometime.

Now this does everything I want well. Plays games with no issues I can see and any other tasks I set it get done admirably. The reason I am going to upgrade is the best reason there is.

I want to.

I plan on ordering in 3 stages (all related to pay day at the end of each month)

This week I am ordering the Case and PSU (ordering Wednesday unless the case stock drops faster than it is)

Start of November I shall order the SSD's (2 of these in RAID 0 plus my existing 500g drive)

The end of December the rest

Of course the SSD's and overclocked bundle all depend on what's available at the time of order but that's basically what I want.

I shall keep the 5770, for now, and may either upgrade to a faster single GPU, or get a 2nd 5770 and have 2 running.

Any suggestions?

Or you could get a better PSU, theyre ok but not the best tbh, slightly higher ripple than Id like for a decent system, could look at something like the XFX Black Edition, little bit more but worth it imo

Also rather than getting 2 of those SSDs, Id rather get one bigger one, such as Crucial 128Gb, running 2 in RAID means you lose TRIM (afaik) which will have longer term performance hit, plus the Crucial is better in the first place anyway

Rest looks spot on, if it were me Id sell the 5770 and buy something like a 6870 or even 6970/6950 when theyre out

Hmmm I am none the wiser now with what to do about SSD(s)

I have added 1 to my order this week, since it's on offer atm, and may add another later. It's an OCZ Vertex 2e and I've seen mentioned that due to it's controller the TRIM issue in RAID 0 isn't an issue.

Can anyone confirm this?

First parts arrived a little while ago.

Now to decide what graphics card to get. Something around the £200 mark. The rest is still undecided and depends on what OCUK OC bundle I fancy buying at the time.

Considering how fast the tech moves, I would wait until nearer the date of your order before choosing a card - not least because the prices fluctuate so much.

Absolutely. I shall also be checking OCUK daily for any graphics card offers in case something really good pops up.

I have the 700W version of your PSU and your case and they cable together nicely. The only cable I needed to extend was the 8pin, but that seems a common thing in cases are the moment. Have fun building!

All looks great! About your GPU plans - the mobos OCUK put in the i5 overclocked bundle often dont support 'proper' x8/x8 x-fire/sli, and this current one is just so. Therefore, when the time comes, you'd be best advised to sell the 5770 and go for a new single GPU. In fact that's normally the best advice even if your mobo does support x-fire/sli :).

One step ahead there as I also received an extension lead for the 8 pin :)

Aye since my gaming needs are sufficiently covered by my single 5770, I shall stick to 1 GPU. I haven't had an nVidia GPU in a long time so I'm considering a 460/470 this time round. Of course with the OC bundle i listed that would negate the easy ability to SLI since the mobo is crossfire but that doesn't bother me.

Cheers guys

Just ordered the final bits. Here's my finished spec (or will be once I get it and build it) I had security issues when ordering the last lot, got rejected ffs, but 10 mins on the phone to my bank and once they realised I wasn't some rip off scumbag, they were ordered.

I bought some fans, and fan controller, from another website :p purely because OCUK didn't have what I wanted or I would have got them from here.

I look forward to having everything and building next weekend.

I shall do a build log once all the bits arrive.

That picture of the case and fan controller is just the fans and controller drawing power from my current PC
