Hi guys,

Completed my third build today and powered it on to the joyous sound of a single beep from the mobo speaker. Set bios to boot from DVD and stuck Windows XP (yes, XP) in to install. After about 2 minutes of loading data, the screen suddenly changes to a typical BSOD:

"A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer... Etc."

Is this likely to be a problem with the hard drive? It's practically the only reused component in this build.

Unfortunately I don't have another HDD to hand which I can swap out to check. Tried booting with individual RAM in various slots and get the same message. All connections checked.

Build is:

MSI Z77A-GD55
i3-2120
MSI HD6850
8GB Corsair Vengeance
Coolermaster SilentPro 700W
WD 320GB Caviar
Pioneer DVD/RW

CPU @ 45'C in BIOS, BIOS recognises the WD HDD being connected to SATA 4.

I read that it is problematic installing XP onto a SATA HDD, is this true?

May I ask why you using xp still? Fair enough vista was complete **** but windows 7 is great.

Absolutely, I totally agree - This build isn't for me, it's for my aging mother who refuses to use anything but XP. I have an i5 system with Windows 7.

Does the disc unpack or write anything before it crashes or does it hang on 0%?

It's installed successfully now, but thanks none the less. :D
