as title really, i'm building a new computer for him, it's all together but i plug it in turn it on and the fans power up for a sec then stop and power up and stop and so on.

what's wrong, i'm thinking i've either not plugged something in or the psu is faulty. the spec is :

- OcUK ATI Radeon X1950 Pro 512MB GDDR3 HDTV/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail
- Western Digital Caviar SE16 500GB SATA-II 16MB Cache - OEM (WD5000AAKS)
- Intel Core 2 Duo E2180 "LGA775 Conroe" 2.00GHz (800FSB) - Retail - Asus P5K-E WiFi Intel P35 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard
- GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC2-6400C4 800MHz Ultra Low Latency DDR2 Dual Channel Kit (GX22GB6400UDC)
- Samsung SH-S203BEBN 20x20 DVD±RW Dual Layer Serial ATA ReWriter (Black) - OEM
- Akasa AK-ZEN-01-BK Zen Black Case - No PSU
- Corsair VX 450W ATX PSU (CMPSU-450VXUK)

cheers

EDIT: i don't even hear a beep from the mobo

yes as soon as i plug the psu and turn the switch on it a mobo light comes on.

nothing comes up on the screen i don't get that far. na i don't have speakers connected atm, should i?

i have the 4 pin into the cpu should i try the 8 pin?

yea i have the pci-e power connector in lol

i've tried re-seating everything, tried different ram slots and different pci-e slot and no luck

EDIT: i don't want to have to start testing stuff in my computer, anyone have any ideas?

If you have the time, get the system out of the case, and try powering it up from there, with just the mobo combo, and the graphics card basically. Just to rule out shorting issues.

I presume you don't have a spare psu?

i only have the psu in my current computer which i don't want to take about, i've already jumped the psu and the fan stays on, on it.

EDIT: it's not just the fans that go out when i power it all up but the power LED goes out

does anyone see any obvious problems? anything not plugged in:
sorry for low quality, i'll take a better shot if it'll help?

It might be the case of testing all on the bench to eliminate possible shorting.
Have you tried resetting the BIOS!

Rob

how do i reset the bios if nothing comes up on the screen?

what you mean the case could be to blame? should i build it up on my table (ontop of anti-static bag) to test it?

EDIT: i'm still not getting a noise from the speaker

Try swoping the cables to the speaker around on the motherboard, you could have the polarity wrong.

You should have a jumper on the motherboard to reset the BIOS.

tried swapping the cable round and no luck, where are the jumpers to reset bios?

EDIT: does this all not just sound like a power issue or something? the mobo would def be to blame yes? as if it was anything else i would atleast get something on screen etc. wouldn't i?

like i said it could be your power supply...You can get the power supply to 'spin up'...but it can still be faulty.

It could also be your graphics card as well, or your cpu =/...but hopefully it isnt that severe obviously.

Do the fans stay at a constant RPM as well?

just spin up to top rpm and then it just cuts off, i think i'll have to leave it for tonight and start testing stuff in my computer :(

ok just home there, i'm going to take it all apart and build it on my table....if it doesn't work i'll try my psu (in sig) and see if that's the problem

EDIT:
Could be psu then, had that at work numerous of times.
does the same thing happen where the fans spin up and then it just turns off

Yeah it has showed those symptoms before, but we've also had them where thing's have been shorting for some reason...Could be something as simple as a faulty cable somewhere.

i took it out of the case built it up and it was grand, put it in the case again and s'all good, guess it was just a stupid mistake

cheers anyway everyone :D
