Somewhere in the middle.
I bought and built the following..

Asus P5Q Pro Intel P45 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard
XFX ATI Radeon HD 4850 "XXX Edition" 512MB GDDR3
Intel Pentium Dual-Core E5200 "LGA775 Core 2" 2.50GHz (800FSB) - Retail
OCZ StealthXStream 500w Silent ATX2 Power Supply
OCZ Gold Edition 4GB (2x2GB) DDR2 PC2-8500C5 Dual Channel

I wanted a fresh install and only had Win XP to hand so went with that.

All boots up fine, seems stable in windows and whatnot.

I built this for a friend and today he told me that it crashed a few times when playing games namely GTA4, and Stalker so far.

It simply locks up with a black screen. unable to ctrl alt del etc.. ya gotta restart it.

I updated all drivers for everything but It still seemed to spaz out.

Temps are fine on the CPU, I couldnt see the gpu temp in the catalyst (but im new to ati)

Any ideas?

In the BIOS is there an option to shutdown when it reaches a certain temperature? or is that only for CPUs?
Has he tried running benchmarks or anything else which could strain the system? Might be able to pinpoint the area that way?

Next time have a look on the back of the gfx card, theres some red LED's, tell us if any are lit when it next crashes, if you look close they have codes next to them like D601 etc

He aint too savvy with PCs and I didnt have time to test any benchies on it. Ill do that this weekend if I dont find a solution.

It was running the games gloriously though. Stalker looked great.
