hey guys,

I have a new build on my floor at the moment but it's been giving me a few problems, it's not letting me install windows and keeps restarting/freezing at a certain point.

i7 920 2.66ghz
Asus P6T
6gb (3x2gb) Patriot RAM (8-8-8-24)
Samsung F3 1TB (SATA)
Old sony optical IDE drive
Corsair HX 620
Asus 9600GT
Stock cooler

Basically originally it was giving me problems loading the windows 7 disc, where by it would just hang on a block screen and dot would flash in the top left hand corner.

I fixed this by updating the Asus bios to 1301, this also fixed a number of other issues such as pressing the restart button would cause it to restart but not boot.

Eventually it was able to read/detect the windows 7 disc BUT now after the "windows is loading files" bar was fully loaded, it would now either a) hang/freeze on this screen or b) restart the computer.

I thought it was a possible RAM issue so i decided to test the ram using memtest, so i put memtest on a floppy disk and booted it from dos.

The exact same thing happens, memtest would fully load and then the computer would either restart or memtest would come on screen for a split second and then restart.

Any ideas? What kind of issue do you think this is, it could be literally ANYTHING!

my next step is to get rid of the old optical IDE drive (as i need a new one anyway) - i tried running the windows 7 install from a flash drive (with the optical unplugged) but i got the same issues. I also tried running memtest with the optical drive unplugged and got the same issues.

the step after that will be to test the RAM sticks individually but i suspect the same thing will happen.

All help appreciated!

ok so here's an update:

set the voltage for my RAM to 1.7 QPI/DRAM and 1.65 for DRAM voltage and I managed to make it past the windows 7 loading screen to the install screen but then it blue screens at that point

tried running memtest on individual sticks - didn't work, still crashes about 4 seconds in and goes back to rebooting itself.

Any ideas?

I think my next step is to try another set of RAM, otherwise should i put this down as a motherboard issue?

Oh and my BSOD is IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL if that helps anymore...

ok managed to sort it out - it was a voltage issue, the auto mode on the asus P6T is RUBBISH at judging what volts to pump through a cpu, i set it to 1.05 and stability issues have improved. Also need to improve the cooling.

ran memtest and the RAM sticks were all thankfully fine.

just need to get a new aftermarket cooler and start overclocking now!

thread can be closed now!
