New build problem

I built a new system :

Asus P8P67
Intel i5 2500
G.Skill 8GB (2x4GB) 1600mhz 9-9-9-24 1.5v
Coolermaster RealPower 700w PSU
Nvidia 210

and whenever I power on the system it will either come on for a second or 2 then power off and then power itself back on again and work fine

or

when I power on all the fans and things startup as normal but I dont get the system beep and nothing happens so I have to hold the power button in to switch it off, then when I power up again it says overclock failed, even though I dont want to overclock and all the bios settings are set to default.

Any ideas whats happening? Ive tried manually setting the RAM voltage to 1.5v and timmings to 9-9-9-24 -2N but still get the same problem.

Help would be very much appreciated!
 
Hi,

Firstly set the RAM voltage to 1.65 volts ( or near to but never over)

I've normally got this error when the CPU fan has popped out or has failed.. So check that you CPU fan is connected to CPU_FAN header and is functioning correctly. If you can enter the BIOS, check that it's running at the correct RPM (PC health status menu) and that it's not running under it's shut down tolerance.. You can set some motherboard to shut down if the RPM drops below a threshold.

Check that you have connected both the 4/8-pin supplementary CPU power connector and the 24-pin ATX connector.

Make sure all your front panel connectors are secure and in place. Make sure they aren't shorting. You can jump start the PC by using a flat end screw driver just to see if it fires up ok thereby eliminating any FP connectors.

Next check your is your PSU is functioning as expected. Use my guide here:

If your PSU is ok, then check your RAM modules by using MEMTEST86+.

Set the RAM at 1.65v as previously stated. Try running your system with one stick of RAM at a time and try that stick in different slots. If the RAM stick fails in all slots, then its almost certainly a RAM problem. If the working RAM stick works in one slot but not another, then this is looking at a memory controller problem which for SB is the CPU.


ps i hope that you bought the 2500k and not the standard 2500 :p

Thanks for the reply, I shall try the above when I get home from work.

I did go for the 2500 and not the K version, why was this a bad idea?

No not really... Both versions have an unlocked multiplier but the non "K" version has "Limited unlock" OC whereas the "K" version is fully unlocked.


Let us know how you get on with the tests above.

I think the main difference on the 2500 to 2500k is that the k version can be oc'ed more, I think the highest you can go on the 2500 is 3,8GHZ on the 4 cores and 4,2GHZ on one core, correct me if I'm wrong. On the 2500k, again not being sure, I heard that it's able to go over 5GHZ. Both are good though, really depends on how much you want to OC.
 
Fingers crossed the problem is solved, I set RAM speed to 1333 even though its rated at 1600 and thats stopped it saying overclock failed.

And the problem where the system would turn on, off, then on is known as the asus double boot problem and was fixed by turning 'Power on by PCIe' on in the bios.

Any ideas why my RAM wont run at its specified speed though?

If your RAM isn't certified for your motherboard (mine is the Asus P8P67 Deluxe) then even though it may be XMP capable, the motherboard can set it at a lower speed to get the system stable and booted. I set the RAM volts @1.52v as it needs slightly more than the stated 1.50v and works fine with either 1600MHz 9-9-9-24 1 or 1867MHz 9-10-9-27 1. Going below the rated speeds will mean you can tighten the timings. Or going higher as I need to means you need to loosen more than the stated speeds but keep the same volts.

A good test to see if its worked is to run IntelBurnTest as if it fails you will get the BSOD and need to loosen timings or lower DRAM speeds. Make sure you are just running everything stock in order to get the RAM stable, then you can play about. Could take some time to sort out but it will be worth it.
