New Build problem

Hi all,

Just built a new pc and used the following mobo, cpu and psu.

£249.99 x 1 - Powercolor Radeon R9 290 PCS+ OC 4096MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card with FREE AMD 8GB 2400MHz Memory Kit
£78.14 x 1 - Gigabyte Z97X-SLI Intel Z97 (Socket 1150) DDR3 ATX Motherboard
£66.66 x 1 - SuperFlower Leadex GOLD 750W Fully Modular "80 Plus Gold" Power Supply - Black

a) Anyway all installs went well, but when I switched on the pc first I couldnt get any signal from the gpu. I could get a image using the built in vga slot on the mobo.

b) SO i double checked and it seemed I didnt plug in enough cables into the gpu from the modular psu. If I plug in one i get the same problem, however, if I plug in two I get no signal from the mobo vga slot.

I am using a vga to dvi adapter. Could that be faulty... or am I missing something glaringly obvious. I can use the vga slot on the mobo, but if i try the vga cable with dvi adapter on it wont work via the mobo dvi slot. Does this indicate that its broken?

Note: I went and changed GP Card as I had it in the PCI X8slot to the PCI 16Xslot yet the problem persists...

Nope you misread completely...

I plug both 8 and 6pin into the GPU and then it automatically disables the Mobo DVI-D/VGA ports (as expected).

However, then neither of the DVI-D ports work on the GPU. I am however using a VGA to DVI-D Adapter.

If I unplug the GPU (just the pin power supplies) I can use the VGA port on the mobo (which I am doing at the moment).

I think it is either:

Its a the VGA to DVI-D adapter is bust

or my oldish 22" Monitor cannot support DVI-D, but I used to use this monitor with a DVI-I adapter with no problem. But this is out of the realm of my know how...
