Hi guys, was helping a friend build a new PC today, which consists of

Asus P5K-Deluxe
Intel Q6600
Corsair HX520 PSU
Sapphire X1950PRO
4 x 1GB of Corsair DDR2

We did some at lunchtime, got everything installed and booted up first time it was fine, had to switch off and go back to work though. Went round his after work, switched the machine on, everything span up, but we got no VGA display. So we just switched off and powered on again and it all span to life and we got a display. It then said "Overclocking failed", i know this is a quirk with some Asus P5K boards so thought not much of it.

Then we went into the BIOS to check everything, DVD drives and hard drives were picked up, CPU temp was 33deg and the Motherboard temp was 28deg, fine i thought. Then out of the blue whilst browsing the BIOS the machine just switched off. We couldnt get anything out of it from this point on, the motherboard light is on, we tried resetting the CMOS, removing the graphics card and unplugging all drives and removing 2 sticks of RAM. We unplugged from the wall for a few minutes and still no luck.

So we are stuck with a PC with a green light on the board, but when we hit the power button nothing at all happens, surely it cant be the button as it let us switch on twice ok earlier? We are both thinking its the PSU thats faulty, what do you guys think?

Also, i have an old Antec 430W PSU we are going to try, will it be ok to test his system as its only got a 20pin ATX cable and his board is 24pin? Do i just plug it into the top 20 pins?

Any help appreciated.

Cheers

You should be able to use the old power supply to test it - you can't do it wrong as it will only fit into the properly shaped plugs! But to me it sounds like the motherboard has gone, this has been a problem I have come across quite often.

The Antec will be fine for testing the rig.

430W would hold that rig stable anyway as you dont have a GFX that wants an electric grid to power up :)
