Hi chaps.

I finally got my rig rebuilt as I blew up my previous one on Christmas day. I am no expert so gave it to a mate to do the honours.

I still have my Steam account and it appeared to be working fine, all games are showing etc. Problem is I can boot up L4D1 and Plants vs Zombies (the only two I have tried) but cannot boot up L4D2. It starts to load then crashes back to desktop just before the options page. Same is happening for BF2 which I do not play through Steam. I can boot it up fine but when I choose a server and it starts to load, does the same and crashes straight back to desktop.

Anybody got any ideas?

Cheers.

PSU = Corsair TX750W

CPU = AMD Phenom II X2 Dual Core 550 3.10GHz Black Edition

Mobo = Asus M4A785TD-V Evo

RAM = Corsair XMS3 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 10666C9 1333MHz TwinX Dual Channel

GPU = HIS ATI Radeon HD 5770 1024MB GDDR5

No fraps or anything.

It is strange how L4D1 seems to work but not L4D2.

L4D2 is loading up fine, same as BF2, it is as soon as they try and connect to the 'online' element.

I am trying one of the L4D2 fixes in the link above so cheers for that.

Once I have that I will try and connect to a 1 player BF2 game to see if that works.

its as if someone or something is trying to stop you from playing violent games
why dont you install a maby pamby game and see if you have the same problem

Updated your chipset/network drivers ?
Tried removing any software firewall/antivirus and running the games ?

Ive not long done a re-install of W7 , i have all my games/steam on another driver, everything on steam worked fine except LFD2, it kept crashing after the intro , tried all the fixes, in the end i deleted all local content, downloaded it again and installed and all was fine.

The way you're talking it sounds like you've just transferred all your steam files over to this new os install, or steam was installed on a separate drive?
Try checking that all the files are there and not corrupt for each of the steam games that aren't working (right click, properties, local files, verify the integrity of game cache). Worth a try before you start fiddling with anything else :D

Cheers chaps.

Right, I have got L4D2 working by one of the fixes in that link that Robert Kindly put up. :D

I have deleted then reinstalled Punkbuster for BF2, but still not working. Going to run patch 1.5 over the top and see if that works. If not, will have to be fresh reinstall of BF2. How I wish I bought it in the Steam sale now. :(

Just for info, it was a fresh reinstall of XP I did but managed to keep it simple as I have one drive for Windows shizzle and one for everything else. Just formatted the C drive and installed Xp back over. Apart from this glitch, seems to have worked out ok..................so far.
