New build problems - need some advice please

Hi all

New PC buld and having problems

Its all built but when i tuen it on nothing happens, no beeps and nothing at all on the monitor

[I assume attaching an anlogue monitor to a DVI only graphics card (with an adaptor) isn't the problem and should still work]

The mobo lights are on
The CPU fan is working
the other case fans are working

Also, there has been no smoke/sparks/explosions

Any suggestions as to what could cause this?

Asus P5q deluxe
OCZ 4gb (2x2) PC28500c5 1066mhz
Antec Tri 650w PSUIntel Q6600 2.4 (gteed to 3.3)
Antec P182
Nvidia 7900GT

can't recall - maybe not
if it wasn't would that stop even the bios showing up? (its an unformatted drive)

hmmm - no

i have a 24 pin power connector - did you mean the one thats makes it up from 20 to 24 or a separate one?

i have both a spare 4 and 8 pin connection thats not plugged in - should one of them be plugged in

gonna check my mobo manual

well - it was me that messed up by not connecting the 8 pin power plug to the mobo Doh!

BUT

am having problems installing windows vists

this is what happened:

1) enabled AHCI in BIOS (have to do this to get Linux install apparently)
2) went through vista install and chose to partition the drive (for dual boot later)
3) then installed vista - it rebooted during the process but when it got to the final bit - completing installation of something it went on for 2 hours (its only a 350 gig partition) but eventually the screen went blank so i rebooted
4) It starts to boot from the hard drive but gets stuck - if i reboot i get the safe mode menu and the error message talks about a possible hardware problem

so - i boot from an Ubuntu Live CD which starts fine - when i look at the partition editor it says i have 3 partitions - shouldn't there only be 2?
i seem to hvae:
1) an unallocated 1 meg (yes meg) partition first
2) 350 gig NTFS partition
3) 585 gig unallocated partition

is the 1 meg partition supposed to be there - if not could thiks be whats causing the probs?

i have the same ram as you - what should the stock voltage be? - i haven't OC'd it yet

also, re the cores - were 2 not working at all? (i'm running my linux live CD at the moment and all 4 are working, though i can't tell the temps and the cores aren't under strain) and how did you tell that was the prob, can you get a prog that monitors the temp of each of the cores separately, or was it jjust a manual check?

no luck with any of the above stuff

i tried loading some AHCI drivers - no luck

i did notice the following flash up in BIOS - not sure if its the reason - and it can't be correct (can it) as my vista install disk seems to recognise it and let me partition it

Marvell 88s61xx adapter
bios version 1.1.0.L70d
Adapter 1
Disk Information - No hard disk found

or is this refering to an IDE drive (that i don't have) rather than my SATA drive?
