I've been looking at upgrading and I've thought if I go cheap on my cpu, Mobo and ram I'll be able to fit a 980ti into the budget.

I figure Skylake will require changing a lot in the future anyway so not much point in going all out right now.

I'd be looking at selling my 2500k machine to a friend for 375 then for about 500 on top I think I can build a whole new machine with 980ti in it. A 970 / 390 based machine would allow a better cpu but I think a 980ti and crapper cpu would still outperform in games.

Opinions?

Well I was thinking that a card alone would cost me 500.

I saw you can buy this for £870

Motherboard - Gigabyte H81M-S2H*
CPU Model - Intel Core I5 4460 3.2ghz 6mb Cache 4th Gen Haswell*
CPU Cooler - Standard Intel Cooler*
Memory - 8GB DDR3 1600mhz Performance Ram*
Hard Drive Size - 1tb Seagate Barracuda Sata 6Gb/s 64mb Cache 7200rpm*
Optical Drive -Samsung 24x Sata DVD Writer*
Graphics Card - Nvidia Geforce GTX 980TI 6gb Includes Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain Game*
PSU Size - Corsair CX600 80 Plus Bronze Certified 600w Power Supply*

So if I sell my 2500k/7950 build for 375 then that spec above would be only £495.

It will be in a crap case but it would be ready built and just need windows.

Seems to make sense but I ain't 100%.

You still haven't supplied us with your full current spec (including PSU) so we really can't give you suitable advice until you do.

That said, you're going to swap a still decent and overclockable 2500K for a non-overclockable i5 with a lower base clock? Why? If you can afford and want a 980ti then buy one. I fail to see the sense in pairing it with that CPU when the one you have is still very good.

If you've made up your mind then go for it - it is your money after all. However don't expect us to say it is a wise decision if it patently isn't and on the evidence we have so far it really isn't a good choice.

Msi p67 c45 mobo
2500k at 4.3ghz
4gb genesis ram
Corsair 500w psu
Corsair 300r case
Numerous hard drives
Dvd drive never used

The reason I consider it is that 375 for my pc while it has some worth would mean very little outlay considering I wouldn't mind getting a 980ti. I'd gain some spare parts too I guess.

i'd feel bad if I charged a friend of mine £375 for that.

I broke it down.

2500k. - 80
Mobo - 30
Case - 40
Psu - 30
1tb hdd - 30
7950 wind force - 80
Ram - 20
Logitech g600 - 30
Logitech g510 keyboard - 30
Noctua cooler - 20
+fans.

350-375 seemed about right to me.

How much do you think I should be getting for it?

Mates rates. 300 would be the most I'd sell that for - 20% off.

He'll be happy with £350 and I think thats reasonable. £300 and it makes it less worthwhile.

I think 2500k. - 80
Mobo - 30
Case - 40
Psu - 30
1tb hdd - 30
7950 wind force - 80
Ram - 20
Logitech g600 - 30
Logitech g510 keyboard - 30
Noctua cooler - 20
Dvd + case fans. - 10

Total £400 individually.

I dont think £350-375 is actually that much of a rip off. Certainly not high enough to feel bad about. I have boxes for all components and have owned all from new.

I am pretty sure that cpu will be slower than your 2500k at 4.3ghz plus it's locked so you can't clock it.

Yeah I understand my 2500k is still a competent chip. Im just wondering if this other chip would hinder a 980ti any. Im imagining the difference in framerate between the two cpus is quite minimal .

I still don't understand why you would sell all your stuff, buy worse stuff + a 980ti for £500 outlay when a 980ti is only £500 anyway?

Well that's kinda why I was asking in first place.

My friend is interested in getting a pc and I figured it was a fair starter machine.

I'd imagine I wouldn't notice much difference in general cpu performance. And I'd gain a 980ti, more ram, a newer socket motherboard and the joy of new gear. Alternatively I buy a 980ti for the same outlay and keep all my own gear.

Alternatively could someone spec me a 980ti PC build that comes with a CPU better than my 2500k, 8gb ram and without PSU or HDDs as I have them spare :) . Keep the price low.

i think if your going to do it you might as well put in the extra money for a k cpu + z motherboard. That way, you get an upgrade and some new toys to play with and its going to last a lot longer than if you didn't put the extra money in.

Thats a fair point but will I notice much of a difference in games? Games are the only real thing that is interesting me here. Thats the draw of the 980ti. I want 1440p without struggling. But the cheaper the better really.

Probably not though there are always those games that take as much CPU power as you have. But at some point you will. You will feel it sooner at 3.2GHz than you will with a 4790k at 4.7GHz.

+ you get to have cool stuff now lol.

I sold my 2600k + motherboard to a mate last week and got a 4790k + motherboard so maybe I'm just trying to justify my purchase through you, who knows.

I wouldn't have traded it for a locked i5 though, I know that.
