Just starting to put my new PC together, I've an AM2 3500 retail processor which has it's own fan. The instructions mention you should always use thermal compound but I can see none in the box.

Should it have some?

I notice the bottom of the fan has a grey pad on it, is this instead of the therma paste?

Yeah the paste is pre-applied to the bottom of the HS.

BINGO, that's the thermal paste though in pad form. That's the stuff they normally say you should wipe off if you have a tube of thermal paste that you want to use like AS5
