I am going to build a new system. I am looking for optimal bang for buck, I do not want to spend an extra £100 for a few FPS.

Maximum overclock potential is a must!

I want as much input as possible can you answer 1 or 2 to each of the 5 questions.

Question 1 - 1, Intel Core 2 DUO E6300 OR 2, Intel Core 2 DUO E6600

Question 2 - 1, Asus P5B Deluxe OR 2, Asus P5W DH Deluxe WiFi

Question 3 - 1, HIS ATI Radeon X1900 XT ICEQ 3 OR 2, HIS ATI Radeon X1900 XT-X ICEQ 3

Question 4 - 1, G.Skill 2GB DDR2 HZ PC2-6400 (2x1GB) OR 2, GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC6400

Question 5 - 1, 2 x Western Digital Caviar SE16 250GB 2500KS SATA-II 16MB Cache OR 2, 2 x Western Digital Raptor 74GB WD740ADFD 10,000RPM SATA 16MB Cache

Question 3 is easy = 1, no point getting the XTX as its a waste of money, number 1 easily clocks to XTX speeds as the XTX is not that much faster, a very small overclock will get those speeds no trouble. :)

Can't help on the rest, sorry.

1: 1 - E6300 costs less and overclocks well.
2: 1 - P5B is the better board and also cheaper.
3: 1 - As has already been said - XT can be overclocked past XTX in minutes.
4: 2 - Both good just a lot more people are going for GeIL.
5: Neither - Get a Seagate 7200.10 250GB - Latest and greatest 7200RPM drives out.

question 1: E6600 because it has a 4mb cache instead of a 2mb cache like the E6300 altho both overclock well...

question 2: Asus P5W DH Deluxe WiFi because it comes with Wifi for all over £6 which to me is a packet of B n H and saves u having to buy a network card for £20 - £40 depending on what u go for...

question 3: I'm with loadsamoney

question 4: G.Skill 2GB DDR2 HZ PC2-6400 (2x1GB) ( I always get HZ - so its my personal preference )

question 5: Depends what you prefer, I have a 150g WD Raptor and hate it (altho its 10,000rpm) cuz its so loud, you can make it quieter but you have to spend an extra £30......go for anything like seagate or samsung (again my personal preference ) I still buy maxtors on some occassions altho they have a horrid rep (touch wood) i have never had any issues...

hope that helps

aye!

Depends on whether you choose the E6300 or the E6600. P5B for the E6300, P5W for E6600. Or even better the DS4 or DS3 to go with E6300. From overclocking standpoint though.

Im now thinking of going with the E6600, Asus P5W DH Deluxe and the G Skill ram.

If I go for the E6300 I would go with the, Asus P5B Deluxe (Socket 775) and GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC6400 800MHz.

Does anyone have the above specs and if so what speeds are they getting?

well i went for a 6400,geil pc6400,x1800xt,ds3 and i am chuft as it was a budget upgrade that paid off.my combo works well has primed 3.62 gig which if you look at the conroe overclock database is the best non engineering sample above an extreme and several 6600 cpus....super pis at 3.8gig little more to come i think....so i wouldnt say the 6600 justifies the extra cost(which is 80-90 pounds for 2mb extra cache and the higher multi...

all boils down to what you require from your pc?

which if you look at the conroe overclock database is the best non engineering sample above an extreme and several 6600 cpus

dont you just love custom water cooling kits :)
Maximum overclock potential is a must!

to maximise your overclocking potential your looking at water cooling...and if you choose to go for air cooling then a sychte ninja hsf..

However for maximum overclocking potential on air you *** have a better chance with the e6600 because it has a higher stock speed...

6600 is only a safer bet assuming both cpus are poor examples and dont wanna budge above there rated speed ...i had to make this decision it was only the fact that the 6400 costs little more than the 6300 that i chose it...

but for a little more than 6600 money ,you could by a 6300 and 2 gig of geil pc6400 -which fits what your asking:

bang for buck
dont want a few extra fps for the sake of a hundred quid...

i would go 6300/6400(20 quid gets higher multi-is it worth it for you???id say)
the geil ram as its proven with upto 500 fsb regular
mobo -cabt comment but my ds3 has no probs...f4 latest bios no issues?

my water cooling is bits from my older setups:
hydor l30 -modified
alpacool nexxos 775 water block
dden 5 inch bayres
120.2 rad with fan controller
0.5 inch tygon tube

this lot could be picked up for around 100 quid used, people never rated the l30 but i stuck with it...ac powered, small, doing a good job on mine and theyre cheap.

Is there example of poor overclocking conroe chips?

For you the decision was that much easier because you have watercooling as everyone knows it will get you a better overclock than on air in most cases..

However when you dont have watercooling options sometimes its better to spend that little extra so you know the speed you overclock too will be higher as the stock speed is higher than the cheaper option...

I hear ya pal :)

In Langers case I would say as he has stated
Maximum overclock potential is a must!
and the fact he does not have watercooling option it would make sense for him to go for the E6600....Im just going from what he says :)

guess its like the 2500 virsus 3200 barton scenario........

yup i hear you to m8 -i guess we have put the case for both options forward
and look forward to his choice and results ,good luck m8... ;)

Im completly bloody lossed now! I dont know what to get the PDW, P5B, DS3 or DS4. Dependant on that which cpu to get 6300, 6400 or the 6600. Then dependant on the above two which ram the Geil or G Skill.

HELP ME PLEASE. I WANT MOST BANG FOR BUCK AND OVERCLOCK TO THE MAX!

Im also scared of spending out for the upgrade and then getting wipped out by Kentsfeild, however I believe that will be £800 ish, so not for me.
