Putting together a build for a friend, who wants a capable system for Photoshop work, video editing and gaming. I've come up with the following... any suggestions? Budget is around the £400-500 mark for mbd/cpu/ram, but less is better, so if no particular benefit in going for the newer tech, then happy to look at older. I've read there isn't much benefit in the newer chips anyway.

I was attracted to the Gigabyte because of the 2 for 1 promotion at the moment... seems a great deal. I'm less certain about the CPU/RAM though, as it's been a while since I've looked in to this. I'm still running a 2500k Sandy Bridge myself lol!

- GA-Z97X-UD3H-BK
- Intel Core i5-4690K 3.50GHz
- Avexir Core White Series 16GB

:)

Ah OK, that makes sense actually. Any particular brand? I'm bewildered by the RAM options these days lol!

Ah, see your suggestion. That's some funky looking RAM lol. Cooler will probably be going with a 240 AIO, not sure yet.

Is the i7 4790K and board bundle too much money?
Which bundle is that?

This is only £10 more than your spec, and will be a lot better for editing with the 8 threads and guaranteed 4.4GHz speed.

YOUR BASKET
1 x Intel Core i7-4790K 4.00GHz (Devil's Canyon) Socket LGA1150 Processor - Retail £259.99
1 x Avexir Core White Series 16GB (2x8GB) DDR3 PC3-17200C11 2133MHz Dual Channel Memory Kit (AVD3U21331108G-2CIW) - White Light £129.95
1 x Gigabyte Z97P-D3 Intel Z97 (Socket 1150) DDR3 ATX Motherboard £61.99

Shivy's right, running 2 x 8GB instead of 4 x 4GB RAM can avoid voltage issues.

Whaaat happened there? lol Wrong thread post or something?

Is this too much money (assuming you have no cooler?)

YOUR BASKET
1 x Gigabyte Z97X-UD3H-BK - Devil's Canyon Core i7 4790K CPU & Motherboard Bundle **£35 Saving** £367.98
1 x TeamGroup Vulcan RED 16GB (2x8GB) DDR3 PC3-17100C11 2133MHz Dual Channel Kit (TLD316G2133HC11ADC01) £129.95
1 x Raijintek Themis Direct Contact CPU Cooler £19.99
Total : £527.52 (includes shipping : £8.00).

or the RAM stulid suggested, probably a better choice

OK, looking good, that's upper limits of budget but I hadn't thought of i7 before, makes more sense for sure. Does the Gigabyte 2 for 1 offer still apply if you buy the bundle?

It does, they come in seperate boxes and it's just like buying the two seperately, only discounted :)

Yes.

And it makes more sense than what shivy posted what with red ram+cooler on a black+gold board;)

Like that then? Do you have a cooler OP? If not, what case is this going in as if it is small the cooler might not fit. Unlikely but still possible :)

Probably going with a 240 AIO... waiting on the release of the Nepton 240M which going by reviews is a great all round performer and quiet. No urgent rush, but I think it's due very shortly anyway. This is personal preference... I know the air coolers are fine and would do a good job.

Case is another conundrum tbh! He wants white (hates black boxes), and nothing too loud. Also will be putting a 970 in this... with option for SLI in future.

This sounds about right

YOUR BASKET
1 x NZXT H440 Mid Tower Case - White £89.99
Total : £99.59 (includes shipping : £8.00).

Too much money perhaps though? There's the Raijintek Agos which seems like a good budget case (comes in white + black). An even better white case would be the Enthoo Luxe in white, looks great but is expensive
And another option... Air 540 in white - odd shape but can fit some desks and is a really good case!

What about the Phanteks? They seem to get rave reviews. No need for optical bay by the way. I quite like the H440 myself, but seems to have cooling issues.

Great case

Correct about the H440 though, front intake is restricted from what I heard
