I know that people go a bit mental on these forums for power consumption calcs and requirements for their tip top machines. So where better to start such a question.

A new rig I would like to build will have the following (and will not be overclocked!):

1 x Intel Core 2 Quad Pro Q6600 "Energy Efficient SLACR 95W Edition" 2.40GHz
2 x Samsung SpinPoint T 500GB SATA-II 16MB Cache
1 x OCZ 2GB (2x1GB) PC2-6400C4 Dual Channel Platinum Revision 2 XTC Series DDR2
1 x Abit IP35 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard
1 x PowerColor ATI Radeon HD 3850 Pro 256MB GDDR3 TV-Out/Dual DVI/HDMI
Antec NSK 4480 Mini Tower Case (Silver) - 380W Earth Watts PSU (this is the sticky point)
1 x DVDRW, possibly a 2nd later on.
possibly 1 ATA HD (doubtful though)

What type of PSU would suit this? as the only real sticky point is the case and PSU.

I have an arctic cooling case, with an integrated PSU (GUTTED!) and it is only 350watts (continous) and only has a 20pin header blah blah. annoyed I spend 120quid on a case 3 years ago that looks good but cant change the PSU.

here are the current PSU specs (only powering a xp2500+, x800pro etc):
Seasonic/ARCTIC, active PFC
3.3V: 28A, 5V: 30A, 12V:17A
-5V: 0.5A, -12V: 0.8A, 5Vs: 2A
450 Watt max. / 350 Watt continuous Power

ok many thanks in advance chaps, always a helpful bunch.

i'd got for a corsair 520w.

maybe something like the Lian-Li PC-7 PLUS II Aluminium Midi-Tower Case.

Alternativly you could just go for the Antec Sonata III Piano Black Quiet Case with EarthWatts 500W PSU.

is a 500W really necessary though?

quick calcs using an online form for power supplies shows 280ish watts. I appreciate that its all about 12v rails etc for the most demanding part being CPU, mobo, graphics etc...just seems that is 200watts above normal operating requirements (40%!)

I am asking by the way...not telling :)

nah 500W isn't really needed, just allows for expansion in the future.

as you're not overclocking the 380w should be ok, 3850 isn't that power hungry from what i've seen.

other alternative with a bit of extra power is the Antec NSK 6580 Super Midi Tower Case - 430W Earth Watts PSU.

ok thanks very much. Think I might look to push a bit further and get the 430. seems silly to spend all that dosh on a quad and not back it up with a decent power supply.

everyone wants a bargain though :)
buy cheap buy twice. never learn't from that one.

thanks for your time guys!
