hey all

I know not everyone is gonna be of the same opinion but hey, here goes.

Finally upgrading from my aging MSI P35 Neo2FR / Q6600 / GTX550Ti / 8 gb Geil Black Dragon based rig for something a bit newer.

I'm currently looking at:
MSI Z97 Gaming 7
i5 4690 (not intending on OC so not going to bother with the K version)
MSI GTX 960 2gb
Corsair H60 (running as exhaust in a push pull config with Cougar Vortex 120mm PWM fans)
600w Modular PSU (unmentionable brand, only 8 months old so keeping it)
2 x Cougar Vortex PWM fans for intake.

Now this is all going in my Bitfenix Comrade case along with 3 sata drives of varying size, and my Samsung 120gb 840 Evo as my primary drive.

For ram I'm considering getting some Geil Black Dragon (16gb 1600mhz).

Why MSI and Geil some might ask. And now I'm talking back to the days of the KT3 ultra boards way back when, because in 10 years of building rigs for myself and friends, they've never let me down.

Only ever known of 1 board to fail, and that went after 2 weeks, when a PSU went and fragged the mobo with it.

So basically, not that I'm looking for glowing approval obviously :D , but has anyone on here had any issues with the GeiL (any, not just Black Dragon) with MSI boards that might make me change my mind.

Certainly a good deal, but I've never been that keen on Gigabyte.

A case of going with what you know.

I'll admit getting this https://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=BU-005-GI&groupid=701&catid=6&subcat=2858

beats what I can get for the MSI gamng 7 with a 4790K, which locally comes out at £409.

But I'm trying to keep it sub £600 for the main components I'm looking to get.

Theres also the issue that while i've bought stuff from here before, something like a Mobo or CPU being duff, I gotta wait and have it picked up etc.

At least with where I'm sourcing the components from, if its duff, i can go right to them in under 15mins.

As far as the higher speed ram goes, like i say, im not interested in O/c right now. I mean i did the whole stupid OC of the Q6600 when it came out. now i just want a nice fast machine to play games on after work :D

Ah, but all you have to do with the RAM is set XMP and save+exit the BIOS and it sets it up for you (speed/timings and voltage).

Easy one click solution.

Now, changing from the Geil to the Vulcan, is doable.

Spending just shy of 2/3 of my budget on 2 components then having to sacrifice the 960 for a cheaper vga card, is not.

yea, seen the gigabyte offer, gotta upgrade before 3 yrs are over
right now im looking at
Mobo, £135
4690, £176
960, £165
Ram TBD

so far £476 + ram

My tops is £600

Yes to all those points, but has a free game.

The GTX770 2Gb is on offer till tomorrow and so is a 280X.

heh came in for thoughts on ram, almost gets talked into a completely different system :D

the Gaming 7 is better than the Gigabyte, which is effectively a Gaming 5 grade board

Definitely something to think on right now.

Will make my mind up in the next few days.
