Hi, i have just put together a rather modest pc for my sons birthday

specs

pentium k anv g3258 @4.6
Asus h81m plus
hd 7950 3gb
550w super flower psu
2gb ram (hence my question)

I did have a spare 2gb stick of the same ram to put but its not working and my machine has 8gb of ddr2400.

so could i just let him borrow one stick of mine and put his 2gb stick in mine running them both at 1600 timings = 6gb how much would that affect my gaming till i can buy him a decent set?

You Should be fine with 6gb rm for gaming, and as for adding another 2gb to your sons the motherboard will drop the timings to 1600mhz.

how many sticks would each system end up running 2 / 4 is fine but 1 / 3 is bad and can slow the performance of the ram/system

I would be taking out 1x 4gb stick from my machine and putting in his 2gb stick and setting them both to run at 1600 same timings and putting the 4gb stick i took from my machine and putting it in his till i can buy him a decent set.

so do you guys think that would be ok for time being? it seems to be running fine my system with 1x4gb and 1x2gb.

regarding my sons system up top how can i set the ram to run at 1600 i can only find settings to run a 800/1066/1333/1400?

it would be fine. you may get a little drop in FPS in games and any heavy ram work loads would slow a little but they will both run fine.
i gamed for about 4 months with only 1 x 4gb stick.
