new build running slow

i have just changed my mobo and chip, for amd 6000 x 2 and m2n sli mobo, to p5q pro and E8500.
xp installed with all sp's
but boot up takes around 1 - 1 and half mins. and it generally feels slugish. and to be honest i cant really feel a difference from the amd chip.
any ideas on what maybe causing this ?

Installed mobo drivers? Do a speed test with HDTach and show us a graph as well. Maybe check the BIOS for HD quietening options and turn them off. To confirm, it was a clean XP install and you didn't just swap the HD over?

yes mobo drivers installed
it was a quick format and new xp install
been looking at bios update via asus update, is it as simple as downloading the rom file and getting asus update to do the rest ( flash it ) ?
