Hi,

I have ordered and built the following -

Code:
Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro CPU Cooler
Intel Core 2 Quad Pro Q6600 "Energy Efficient SLACR 95W Edition" 2.40GHz
Corsair HX 520W ATX2.2 Modular SLI Compliant PSU
GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC2-6400C4 800MHz Ultra Low Latency DDR2 Dual Channel Kit
BFG GeForce 8800 GT OC 512MB GDDR3 HDTV/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) -
Western Digital Caviar SE16 320GB SATA-II 16MB Cache - OEM
Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3R (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard
Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium 64-Bit Edition DVD - OEM - 1Pk
Lian-Li PC-7 PLUS II Aluminium Midi-Tower Case - Black

I've installed Vista, games run great etc etc

However, everytime I plug anything into the back board (eg a USB cable, a sound cable) then I see a small red light flash in the mobo (where the line of indicator lights are) and it instantly shut down.

After it does this, the power button wont do anything. It will stay this way for anything from 2 minutes to over an hour.

It also, occasionally, does the shutdown at random, but it _always_ does it when I plug something into the backboard.
Any ideas would be very much appreciated.

Thanks,
Dean

Couple of things to check is the system temps, in the bios system health section (assuming it has somthing like that), just to check they are normal, ensure you have the latest or recommended bios version for your motherboard, check you have latest drivers for the motherboard maybee run windows update and make sure your device manager in windows doesnt show any exclamation marks next to any hardware indicating an error.

Okay, I'll check the drivers when it next decides it has power.

I know the temp is ok, I was actually watching the temps once while I plugged in a usb cable.

The bit thats annoying me most is the delay, I don't know what it is that is allowing to have power again, I unplug it, toggle the power switch, pray to all the gods etc

Given the delay in it allowing the power to come back on I would have a guess that its the PSU that 'could' be faulty, when its running again check periodically the air temp coming out of the fan of the PSU, it shouldnt really be much warmer than the ambiant temperature of the room, if it is then I would say its being overloaded or its got a fault causing it to heat up too much, check the PSU fans are running as intended ensure its not got a manual setting that off or at very minimum, if possible set to auto so it can self manage it. (not sure if yours has this so dont assume it does have fan speed control).

Sounds like your PSU is dying, but the shutting down on plugging in thing is weird, Again I'd be seriously worried about the PSU.. Possibly something shorting out?

You should have really put this in the gen hardware forum!

Okay, it shut down before I posted last night, and hasn't come back since :(

I got hold of a brand new Arctic 600W modular PSU, fitted that, and it still wont even start. No power at all.

Does anyone have any ideas on any tests I can do at this stage? My GF suggests the motherboard is fried, but I don't want to buy a new one without knowing for sure.

Just to update people on the outcome, I took the motherboard out last night and found that one of the screws was twisted and presumably was shorting.

I replaced this and refitted the kit and its running absolutely fine now, not a single drop or problem.

Thanks for everyones suggestions.
