Hey gang,

Buidling a new machine after having a notebook for 3 years.

Last machine I built was a P4 , so im a little behind with the optimal hardware now. Spent some time checking charts - but they dont compare to actual experiences of builders/users.

Not looking at overclocking just yet, main use is gaming (mostly WoW)
Would appreciate any help, tips, advice you can offer. Thanks in advance.

##edit - I would be really interested on any views with regards to going AMD - as in AMD Phenom II X6 Six Core 1090T Black Edition 3.20GHz (Socket AM3) - Retail / Asus Crosshair IV Formula AMD 890FX (Socket AM3) DDR3 Motherboard

i'd go with an i5 processor like the 750/760 or the amd phenom II quad /x6 core.

for the backup drive have a look at the samsung f4 2gb drive.

gfx card wise if your looking to play new games at a high res stick with the 470 if not have a look at the 1gb 460's.

That's way OTT for WOW, but I'm sure you know that, right? You could spend not much over half that on a rig capable of running WOW. But looks like you just want to build a beast for other games and to last a long time, so fair enough.

Personally I wouldn't bother with i7 for gaming. i5 7xx is no slower in gaming and a good deal cheaper. Likely to remain the case for the life of those chips imho.

thanks for the replies so far. Perhaps I did not give enough info in the first post....

My budget is around £1300.

I play wow mostly, but only because the notebook was hardly upto anything more - would like to play fps shooters and such at 60fps on ultra settings @1920*1080.

looking for a system I dont have to upgrade for 12 months, thats preferably quiet.

again, any advice / info would be great, even if you have time to create a new shopping basket ;p

what would you buy?

cheers!

GTX 470 in SLI with a good processor for gaming and still includes an SSD.

Enough money left for a decent cooler if you ever think about overclocking at a later date.

This is my first time spec'ing someone a build, If i missed something please excuse me

first off are you desperate to get this system or could you for the new processor/gfx card releases, as the i7/i5's/am3's are dead sockets and are set to be replaced.

if you want to buy now i'd go with most of mayfairs spec, but i'd swap the sli 470's for a single card too start with.

instead of the sli setup get the 128gb version of the crucial ssd.

i'd also swap the storage drive for the samsung f4 2tb.

if you want quiet maybe consider a third party cooler like the noctua NH-D14, or similar.
