Right, this is what is happening:

Usually i just get a blank screen, no video output (and with this holding the power button usually won't shut it down either)

Sometimes it gets to the BIOS welcome screen, and seems to freeze there (Sometimes taking about 10s to actually get there)

Thrice so far (out of about 30 start ups) it will get right through the BIOS.

What is going on?

Gigabyte GA-MA770-UD3 AMD 770 (Socket AM3/AM2+) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard
AMD Phenom II X2 Dual Core 550 3.10GHz Black Edition (Socket AM3) - Retail

OCZ Titanium 4GB (2x2GB) Edition DDR2 PC2-6400 Dual Channel (OCZ2T800C44GK)

I apologise if this is to be considered prematurely bumping the thread, but I actually am quite short of time for today and am hoping for some quick responses to my problem.

Have you overclocked at all? Check no auto overclocking is turned on in the BIOS.

Try removing everything but leave 1 stick of memory see if it boots then (i.e. no CD drive, external graphics if it has on board etc).

It does not have on-board, and i have literally just assembled it, so no overclocking at all. I have already tried moving the ram around aswell as only using one stick, and i've also tried unplugging the hard drive and dvd drive etc.

It now seems to be getting to the bios splash screen a bit more often, but most of the time will not get past it.

.

The power supply has a 20pin + 4pin main power connector, aswell as two 4pin conectors labelled CPU1 and CPU2. I have the 20pin + 4pin connected to the main atx power connector on mobo, with CPU1 connected to the 4 pin atx 12v power connector on mobo.

.

On another note, i've tried a few times when it has just been blank, to just leave it for even 10 minutes, and almost always to the point of my patience, it has EVENTUALLY reached the BIOS start screen, although rarely getting past it

Does it matter that i don't have an IDE harddrive or cd drive at all?

Can you get onto the BIOS? or not?
If you can i'd get on, set to defaults, and save.

Could be an overheating problem maybe?
My pc was turning itself off after a min cus the cpu fan wasnt seated properly...

Most of the time i cannot get into the BIOS settings, once i was able to, and i checked temperatures and everything, and CPU was at 26*C after leaving it running for about 15 minutes constant, so temperatures seem just fine, and i did set to defaults when i did that.

I've been suggested that i could have a shorting somewhere on my mobo from improperly mounting it, i have used the mounting screw thingies to raise the mobo off the case as i would normally do, but i'm going to try dismantling the computer and running it out of the case to see if that makes a difference.

right, apparently, the BIOS that is loaded onto the mobo doesn't support AM3 socket CPU's, and i've downloaded a BIOS update that does... but now i've got it loaded on a usb stick, but apparently that won't do, since i've managed to get to the Q-Flash utility, but on selecting 'update BIOS from Drive' it only lists the floppy drive, which i don't even have installed in the computer....

Re: the USB pen, I think it would be on by default, but you can check to see if you have something akin to Legacy USB Storage Detect enabled in the Integrated Peripherals section of the BIOS if you've not already done so.

That's all I can think to look for. Whether USB pens need to be formatted a particular way to be detected I'm not sure. Did you leave the pen in when starting up? Mine are not detected if inserted while the utility is already running.

RIGHT i swapped CPU with an Athlon X2, and it worked perfectly! So i updated the BIOS to the newest version, which explicitly says on gigabytes website - support for AM3 Socket.

And what do you know? IT STIll DOESN'T WORK with my Phenom II processor.

It even says on Gigabyte's website, that the latest version of the BIOS, the one i just updated to, is listed as being for the Phenom X2 550 processor on their CPU list for the motherboard.

why won't it wooork :'(

I've ran overclockers support to see if i can get the phenom processor checked out / replaced if necessary, because i just cannot see it being anything else if it all works fine with the athlon, but even with updated BIOS doesn't work with the phenom

okay, more confusion; the build with the phenom just started booting again this morning, although again only for a few seconds before freezing; does this mean that my processor perhaps isn't faulty?

Faulty processors are pretty rare, much more so than motherboards or graphics cards. But if the BIOS is up to date and it works with an X2, it is starting to sound that way. I think you should give OCUK a ring, explain the situation simply and see about getting a replacement.

Yeh, I've already done that yesterday, but i'm still trying to get it to work in the hope i won't need to do that, but yeh; if i can keep everything the same, and have it work flawlessly with an Athlon X2, even with updated BIOS, then i can't see what else it could possibly be.
