Hey all,

Just finished building my gfs new computer and getting a weird startup. When it gets power it just spins the fans on and off, and all the lights on the motherboard blink in time with the fans spinning up.

Anyone got any ideas?

(It's an i3 on a GA-H55M-UD2H using integrated GPU and 4GB of dual channel corsair dominator, CX400, SpinPoint F3, Arctic Freezer 7 Pro, in an antec p180mini.)

Memory in the correct slots, all power connections connected including the 4 or 8 pin for cpu power.

Try a trusty CMOS reset.

Shorted it, now I get the CPU fan and one of the case fans spins up properly and flashing 4 mobo lights, probably flashing about 2 times a second.

3rd furthest from the cpu, can't get it into the closest one as the CPU cooler is obstructing it - would this make a difference?

Built it outside the case, one stick of ram in the second slot, seems to power up now for a second, all four phase lights flash and then it dies.

Hmm, does not sound good. Can you try the other memory module just in case the one your testing is a faulty one.

What model PSU are you using.

Tried both memory modules, the PSU is a Corsair CX400. Don't know if it's normal but the PSU is sort of emitting a strange noise even when there's no power to it, not sure if it's just power left in it or not - I don't usually put my ear up to PSUs.

Is there another PSU test the system with, I know someone on these forums had a DOA Corsair PSU.

No, unfortuantely not.

What would be my best bet? Ask to return of both the PSU and the Motherboard for test and replacement?

I've never had to return a single component from a build so don't know how much onus is on me finding the faulty part.

I would be inclined to send the PSU, CPU and PSU back, this will mean Ocuk can test all parts and find the faulty component, especially as we all don't have spare parts about to test.

I had problem with build last year, sent the CPU and motherboard back and these were working fine, turned out to be the 2nd set of memory were faulty which I did not send back :(

Funny thing is I just moved the RAM to the 3rd slot, and it powered on, albeit with the phase lights continuously on, so thought I'd see if it was posting by going to get a VGA cable. I turned it off, went downstairs to get a monitor and VGA came back hooked it all up and it went back to doing the previous fault.

In my rather inexperienced opinion the PSU looks like the most likely culprit.

Thanks for all your help so far, after buying my pc from OcUK I actually decided to go with another company for my gfs due to the free delivery promotion being a lot easier to obtain. Maybe this experience is the computer gods teaching me a lesson in retailer loyalty ;)

No Probs, hope you get it sorted :)

In the future buy all parts from Ocuk :p Spie must be interrupting the delivery and sabotaging the items!!

Tried booting it up again this morning and got the "constant four phase lights, all fans spinning, no display on the monitor" again, so rang up.

Got an RMA sorted, was told over the phone "It can't be a power error if the fans are spinning up" so will have to see what comes of it.

In my circumstance, could a company still charge me for "no fault found" if it were the PSU that was dodgey? Despite me telling them I thought it could be the PSU.

Right, I sent the CPU, mobo and RAM back to the retailer and got the dreaded "no fault found" e-mail.

Now I've either been a complete spaz and managed to fail multiple times at setting up a motherboard, ram and cpu. Or the PSU is dodgey - something which I was originally told couldn't be faulty in my circumstance.

So I rang up and got given three options.

- They send the stuff back and pay £35 + VAT for a testing and delivery fee, then I test it, if I still get issues I send the PSU back to them to check if that's faulty, if it's not they charge another £35 + VAT.

- I send the PSU back at my own expense they test that and if it's not faulty they charge the same £35 + VAT. If it is faulty I doubt they'd refund my delivery costs.

- They arrange for the PSU to be collected and if it's found not to be faulty, they up the charge to £50 + VAT, if it is faulty I don't get charged at all.

There was literally only one RAM slot (closest to the CPU) that I couldn't test because of the cooler.

Not really sure which option to take, anyone got any opinions/advice?
