Hiya guys

I finally have the money to start buying the bits for my new build, which I started to spec up last november!

So far I have :

Antec p190 Case
Intel Q6600 G0 Quad processor
Thermalright Ultra-120 Extreme CPU Cooler
2GB GEIL 6400 RAM
Abit IP35 Pro MOBO
Geforce 8800GT 512mb OC graphics card (one of the higher OC ones)
Corsair HX 620Watt power supply
Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 500GB HDD

Does all this still look cutting edge, and a decent gaming PC?
I have around £700-850 to spend. So if anyone can suggest any improvements on the above, I'd be most greatfull!

Cheers guys.

still a cracking spec, i suppose it isnt a question of if, but how long it will be a cracking spec.

As long as you get the 8800 GT with the uprated cooler (e.g. leadtek) it doesn't matter which brand you get (just different stickers, warranties and prices).

Well, i'm not expecting it to be an amazing PC for years and years to come.

But if there are any componants out now, or coming soon, that i'd be better off swapping something out for, I'd like to know before I start!
Rather than kicking myself when i've finished building it!! :)

well new quads are on there way as are new gpu's wich promise to show a vast improovmant over current hardware but weather this is true we can only wait and see.
yet again its a question of weather the waiting game is viable with such a short time to wait (4 months if im correct or there abouts) or weather to just buy now.

Do you really mean the P190 case? The one on OcUK seems to come with a 1200w PSU included which would render the Corsair HX620w slightly redundant (and not in the good redundancy way with hot swapping).

I might suggest going for 4gb Ram since it is so cheap at the moment and that is a pretty high end system overall.

Finally I wouldn't bother with a heavily overclocked 8800GT, I'd simply get an 8800GTS or buy one of the cheaper 8800GT cards with the uprated cooler as suggested.

as semi pro said this is what i would do its a little over budget but its a great pc of you really want to buy now, seperate drives for os and storage to me these days is a must and 4gb is a must if your spending this sort of money aswell.

Thanks for that guys.

I have a DVD drive, and a spare HDD that i'll use for the operating system.
The HDD i'm buying will be for storage (mp3's, video's, etc).

Good call on the 4GB Ram. I'll add that to my list.
it is the P182 case that I want, not the P190 (oops). I love the look of it, and i've read loads of good reviews on it. Is that lian Li case better?

Allso, a few people have suggested the 512Mb GTS card, instead of the GT.
Why is this? is the GTS a better card?

Cheers

The price doesnt look that much higher.

I'm thinking now though. If I get the GTX, that takes my total up to about £900...
Is it worth stretching my budget slightly more for this bigger card?

Well, the usual Apps, internet, bit torrents etc.

I am mainly going to be using it for gaming. The games i've ordered are :
Crysis
Call of duty 4
Command and Conquer 3
Bioshock

I've got a 22" Samsung monitor too. if that helps with the advice!
Cheers

Personally i like the lian li cases, there all aluminium wich is allways a great feature form a case and there also very very high build quality makes them a sturdy case.
as for the GTS, yes they are a better card but as melbourne said not by a great margin and i suppose the savings made by purchasing the GT instead could be mmore favourable to you though the GTS do overclock generally further than the GT so thats another thing to take into concideration.
As for a GTX there no point unless your gaming on a 24" or higher screen with full eye candy etc:

EDIT***
Just noticed you game list you play.

Crysis, no good till next year for full detail gaming so your choice now over this game is negligable.
COD4, a freind of mine plays this game on full detail on a 20" screen on a 8800gts 320mb card so either these acrds would do ample.
Command and conquer 3 and bioshock should also be no problem for either of these cards on a 22" screen aswell so its just a case of wich will last you longer. overclocked i suppose the GTS is a slightly btter choice and would have a bit of a better resale value aswell. In the end it comes down to you and what you think is better for you.

If I pay up the extra cash for the GTX card though, surely I am slightly future proofing myself?
I mean, crysis asside, this card should be able to play most games at full detail in the next 6 months at least! No?

Or. I could just go for the GTS, and get one of the new generation cards later in the year...

the gap between the GT and GTS from the GTX on a 22" monitor is so small now that i cant see it being a better purchase to outlast the time you would keep a GT or GTS for, and buying a 9800GTX when they are released is a far better option alltogether so maybe a 8800GT would be the better option depending on the resale value of a GTS when the time comes.

Funny how you can talk your self round isnt it lol form GTS to GT in 9 or so posts lol!

LOL. It is indeed!

you are speaking brilliant sense though. I'll stick to my original plan!

The only problem I can see developing is, will the Abit Mobo be able to handle the new cards....

yep there shouldnt be any problem atall. pcie 2.0 cards will work fine in these boards and the only other aspect that is changing is DX10.1 wich is nothing to do with the motherboard.

Have a look at this, you can still choose a 8800GT and save a little cash, but for 51p over your budget its not bad at all.

The Thermalright Ultima 90 is only a couple of degrees behind the Ultra 120 extreme but almost half the weight! Gets my vote.

Peace :D
