New build, stuck on Bios

I'm off to bed now, will check tomorrow, but thanks for the prompt help; much appreciated.

Thanks guys

It might also be worth taking the CMOS battery out of the motherboard for 10 mins (ensure it is switched off including at the wall) and then put it back in. This will reset any settings that could have been altered in the bios.

I've tried touching the CMOS jumper again but have no idea if I have done it right (I just touched it with a screwdriver for like 5 seconds), I have just taken out the CMOS battery; so I'll report back what effect that will have once put back in.

Thanks guys

No difference with CMOS battery, I'm not really sure what I have managed, is there like a clear site or 'check-list' somewhere I can look at to see if I've built the computer to like a minimum to 'run' despite running on the first go...

Just because I'm inexperienced in the art of building a computer I would have thought it'd of been much more likely that I'm missing something basic in building, maybe just incorrect plug but I have no idea if a physical problem like I'm suggesting would lead to the problem I'm describing - though like you said a video card error would have made sense but I have changed it to my on-board graphics and the exact same problem occurs.

Thanks

Memory?

Are you sure that the sticks are fully inserted in the slots. Try pulling individual sticks and using just one stick in one slot at a time.

Disconnect the hard disk and try with just the optical.

It sounds like it is failing to post rather than going to bios so that means something is not connected or not initialising.

Do you have a fan connected to the CPU header? Is it trying to spin up on boot?

Is the heatsink securely attached? Did you remove any plastic material over the thermal paste?

Do you have both power connectors fixed on the mainboard? 24 pin and 8 pin to provide power to the CPU.

Do you have power to the drives as well as data cables.

As said previously use Sata III ports as they are backward compatible.

Try building it on a table top or similar and testing out of the case. Build on a cardboard box or other non conductive surface.

Sorry if most of the above is obvious but,

best of luck, andy.

I just tried without a ram stick etc. I believe I have tried everything else on there, may just try building it again and being extra attentive.

And no its quite fine, I wanted to make sure I was doing what would be considered the 'obvious' stuff and it seems I am so I have a bit more confidence in what I am doing though not too much as I still don't know how this problem has come about.

Thanks for the help guys,
SK

Having had a proper look at your board, the ATX_12V CPU connector is a 4 pin not an 8 pin. This should be connected. The CPU fan is just below it, likewise this should be connected. The blue sata ports (0,1,2,3) are the native intel sata II 3gbs ports. The gsata ports (white) are sata III on a marvell chipset.

Personally, I would use the blue intel ports until the board is running, then when you can get into the bios, make sure the marvel chipset is enabled.

I am downloading your manual for a quick review.

EDIT It is the DEL key you need to keep pressed as it is booting to enter the bios.

Cheers man your help is much valued, all of what you have said is what I have currently set up with the 4 pin ATX cable and cpu fan plugged in etc. All fans, case, cpu and gfx fans all work.

I have also rebuilt it and I still get the same problem, this black screening or flashing of the initial load screen only arose once I changed SATA cables I believe - is it possible I short circuited something whilst changing them? Would I have noticed?

By the way I currently have the display plugged in via DVI - HDMI by means of gfx card to a TV. I tried a VGA with the TV and it didn't work, maybe I should try a monitor.

i dont think the monitor would have anything to do with it try starting the computer with no hdd or dvd drive plugged in i think it is stopping during posting it might be hitting an error

I would concentrate on just getting the rig to POST properly first and get to the BIOS screen ( as indicated by repeatedly press DEL once you hit the power on button).

Just the motherboard, CPU and cooler, RAM and some sort of video output will do, either onboard or your Graphics card.

Use a proper monitor via VGA/DVI and ditch the TV for now

Back to basics and work up

:)

look in the bios and disable onboard graphics and set first initial display as your graphic card, it will be pcie-1

Solved

Sorry guys, it was just my TV not picking up the TV or something, I used a different monitor and now its fine!

THanks again for all the input and help, very much appreciated.

Cheers,
SK
