Hi all,

I need a new computer from the ground up; my old one has served me well, but it is somewhat old (the cpu is an i3-530). I also need peripherals due to the old ones all giving up the ghost.

Currently I'm thinking a build centred around the shiny shiny ROG Swift (my current monitor is an AOC N20W, sub 1080p), and the following is what I'm thinking of so far:

Intel Core i5-4690K 3.5GHz Quad-Core Processor
Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO 82.9 CFM Sleeve Bearing CPU Cooler (I currently own this)
Asus Z97-PRO(Wi-Fi ac) ATX LGA1150 Motherboard
G.Skill Ripjaws X Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3-1866 Memory
Crucial MX100 256GB 2.5" Solid State Drive
Seagate Barracuda 2TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive
Fractal Design Define R4 (Black Pearl) ATX Mid Tower Case
SeaSonic Platinum 1000W 80+ Platinum Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply
Pioneer BDR-209DBK Blu-Ray/DVD/CD Writer
Noctua NF-F12 PWM 55.0 CFM 120mm Fan x2
Phanteks PH-F140XP_BK 85.2 CFM 140mm Fan x2

The mobo has integrated bluetooth/wifi, which is what I want. The CM sink that I still have will have the two noctua fans attached in push-pull. The PSU has a 7 year warranty and is 1000W to hopefully cope with whatever I throw at it going forwards. Any ideas on alternate parts are welcome if you think I could go about things in a better way.

My main issue stems from not being sure what to do regarding the graphics and monitors. The ROG Swift is as far I understand the bees knees, and ULMB/G Sync with 1440p sounds really good.

I waited until the 900 series reveal, and I really want to go nVidia with this build for the driver support and to try G-sync. Do I go for a 980, 970 sli, or should I try to take advantage of price drops to try and snag some cheap 780s or even 780tis? Is it really worth getting the swift, or would some alternative monitors provide a decent experience?

I really would appreciate people's thoughts on this.

EDIT: Sorry about the link, gents.

I would remove that link, it links to competitors and you'll find yourself on the end of a suspension from the moderators.

Please remove the link as it contains competitors and recheck the FAQ.

Thanks :)

What games will you be playing?
I recently upgraded to a Super Widescreen monitor and I'd never go back as it's awesome for everything.

I'd recommend a 980 to start going SLI immediately stops the ability of adding more GPU grunt in the future, where as a single card now makes more sense. However grabbing 2 780/ti wouldn't be a bad idea as the prices have crashed insanely.

If it's just a gaming build then 16GB RAM can be droppee to 8GB of fast RAM look for a 2400mhz+ set. And if you go with a 900 series card, they're very efficient in power so a 850W would handle 2 cards if you want to save a bit of juice/money.

I'd also recommend a I7 if you're planning to SLI in the future/now.

Yeah as above I'd go for an i7 to help make the most of your GPU grunt.

Is £2k including the cost of the monitor or is it separate? I'd probably get an i7 bundle and 970 SLI and just enjoy a power house for years to come.

Cheers for your replies!

I want to play BF4, Witcher 3, ME4, Dragon Age Inquisition, Far Cry 4 and heavily modded Skyrim to name a few. I'm definitely on board for the good ship 980; the 780tis would be nice, but I think I have my heart set on getting a 900 series now; I think I may try for SLI 980s (I've decided to not include the monitor as part of the 2K spend).

Thanks for the comments about the RAM and PSU; I have a couple of questions - will an 850W rated psu stand up to dual 980s overclocked and an overclocked cpu, with 2 disk drives, an ssd and 2 monitors? For the RAM, if I want to do some video work (maybe streaming or chucking up some gameplay onto youtube), would 8 gb hold up?

I'm interested about your comments regarding the i7; if I do choose to go SLI, what benefit would an i7 give over an i5? Someone else suggested a Intel Xeon E3-1230v3 as an alternate processor and kind of threw me.

Yeah, don't listen to that person. It cheaper and has the same core/threads but when it comes to gaming, its core speed that matters; thats why overclocking is so popular. Thats why the xeons are cheaper, less core speed and no overclockability.

Cheers for the info regarding the processor, Doomedspeed. Can anyone explain why the i7s are better than i5 for SLI?

Also thanks for the builds guys; that's some interesting food for thought :) I must admit, part of me does think it's daft waiting for the 980s and then going reference instead of waiting for the higher quality stuff in just a couple more weeks. I'm gonna have a think.
