My existing build is starting to show its age and rather than upgrade some bits, I'm looking at scrapping everything and starting fresh.

This machine will be used for gaming and a very tiny bit of streaming (literally to friends via Discord). No productivity based work. I currently use 2x 1440p 165Hz Freesync monitors (but G-Sync compatible), so I guess this is the sweet spot I'm aiming for. My original budget was £2k but after putting together some draft specifications, £2.5k is more realistic for what I'm after. It needs to last years with options to upgrade in the future.

I got an early pre-order in for the 7800X3D so that's the centre piece of this build.

My current machine:

Intel i7-8086K
OcUK 240mm Extreme CPU Cooler
EVGA 2070S FTW3 ULTRA+
Asus ROG MAXIMUS X HERO (WI-FI AC) Motherboard
TEAMGROUP T-Force Xtreem 16 GB DDR4-4000
Samsung 970 Evo 1TB NVME
Intel 760p 512 GB M.2-2280 PCIe 3.0 X4 NVME
Western Digital Caviar Blue 1 TB 3.5" 7200 RPM
Lian-Li PC-O11 Dynamic
EVGA SuperNOVA 650 G2

This is the new build I put together after some research:

My basket at OcUK:

Total: £2,227.88 (includes delivery: £0.00)

Missing two things - RAM and PSU. OcUK don't sell G.Skill Trident Z5 Neo 32GB DDR5-6000 CL30 which seems to be recommended a lot on the forums and hits that CL30 / 6000MHz spot recommended by AMD. Again, OcUK don't sell the Corsair SF750 which seems to be the standard go-to PSU for SFF builds. Open to suggestions for either obviously.

I'm edging towards SFF with NR200P as the case of choice. It's small, great price point, easy cable management and even comes with the option of a mesh or glass side panel.

Thoughts? Recommendations? Am I insane for chucking £2.5k at a build for 1440p with a 7900XTX? Should I go for a 7900XT instead and save a few quid?

Any advice would be appreciated :)

don't need the AS5 - the noctua comes with thermal paste already
the nr200p would also take a bigger cooler if you wanted
a bit meh on the price of itx - but you are paying the itx tax so can't really be helped (as am i so who am i to judge lol)
ssd - can additionally consider crucial p5p, wd sn850x or seagate firecuda 530

also, i would pick up an atx3/pcie5 sfx psu rather than the corsair
you're spending that much already...might as well "futureproof" the the internal component you're most likely to carry on using

Noted re: paste.

I can look at a bigger cooler but the Noctua NH-U95 seems to produce great temps already.

The ITX tax is rough but worth mentioning that quite a few of these parts are inflated on OcUK and you can get them cheaper elsewhere. For example:

Asus ROG Strix B650E: £314.99 OcUK / £288.97 elsewhere, saving of £26.02
Samsung 980 Pro 2TB: £199.99 OcUK / £159.98 elsewhere, saving of £40.11
NR200P: £99.94 OcUK / £88.48 elsewhere, saving of £11.46

That's just 3 items with a saving of £77. I always try to buy from OcUK but £77 is £77.

absolutely shop around for the best prices no doubt

the 7800x3d sips power so not a difficult beast to cool, just thinking ahead if you do get a cpu with a higher power consumption

Samsung 980 Pro 2TB
just make sure the firmware is updated - lots of premature drive failures

Any recommendations on a better/more futureproofed PSU?

If your going with the new SF/SFX is the options, both are 3.0

850w

1000w.

Great shouts. The 850W comes in significantly cheaper than the equivalent Corsair and it has PCIE5. I'll have a look into reviews.
I also just upgraded to a 7800X3D lad. Let's boggle like the old days.

Yes led. What build did you go with?
