Made a post some months back about the prospect of a new build, after deliberation I decided to hold off to Jan 2012 to see what turns the market took. Got SWTOR and on my laptop it runs at a "sweet" 20fps on everything LOW lol wana play BF3 and stuff to so time to start thinking about what I’m gona put together here!

So far I’ve got...

  • MSI GeForce GTX 580 OC Twin FrozR II 1536MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card £359.99
  • Intel Core i7-2700K 3.50GHz (Sandybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor - Retail £263.99
  • Corsair Force Series 3 120GB SATA 6Gb/s Solid State Drive (CSSD-F120GB3-BK) £128.99

  • Samsung SH-S222AB/RSMS 22x DVD±RW SATA ReWriter (Black/Silver/Biege) - Retail £19.99

Sub Total : £681.62
Shipping cost assumes delivery to UK Mainland with:

could use a hand from the pros in choosing the following

  • 8gb of some ram (must be 2x4 to allow a jump to 16)
  • power supply (will never need SLI power but may add some extra harddrives etc so some leeway would be nice)
  • motherboard (want z68, again no need for SLI)
  • good 24" monitor
  • cpu cooler that can get me to around 4ghz (possible with stock cooler?)
Also to note I am aware of the savings that can be made with choosing the i5 instead but I’ve decided on an i7 none the less.

When choosing the gfx card I was under the impression that as I won’t be running anything higher than 1080p or multiple monitors while gaming the 1.5gb of vram is more than enough, is this correct?

budget is around £1200 all in, 1250 tops (just for the parts outlined forget keyboards and stuff)! I wont be ordering anything till xmas day or after so really this is just to get the parts speced and a ballpark price! Any help is greatly apreciated :)

Merry xmas all! :p

Thanks for the help mp260767, i have added some of your suggestions to my list, much appreciated :)

When you say youve got, have you already bought? Or have you just decided on those parts? Im not sure, if its the latter then you may want to look at the Antec case/PSU deal to save 15%, and if so, then Id go for the 100 over the 300, PSU wise the Antec TruePower modular 650W would be a good bet, rest as above really

Sorry I phrased that badly, just meant i had got them on my list lol were is that case/psu bundle, I can’t seem to find it on the site?

What uses is this rig for, just gaming?

If you not using it for apps that utilize Hyperthreading, you may as well get a 2500K and put the £80-100 saved to another use.

yeh I no but i may do some video encoding later down the line, wana keep options open as this upgrade will do me untill around 2015, not for gaming of course but by then il have my xbox 720 ;)

Antec 300 Three Hundred Ultimate Gaming Case for a £1200 system seems a bit mean. :)

well it depends, i can see where your coming from but i personaly dont give a monkeys what it looks like as i've never been into the neon wires and stuff :D so as long as performance remains the same the cheaper the case the better, and the antec will provide ample cooling :)

altho in saying that if i found myself to be rich oneday I would have the baddest ass case around but that is not the "case" get it...case (try to lol) :p
