New build woes

Hi Guys.

Just wondering if anyone has an idea as to what might be happening, or if I am missing something obvious.

Got a new build and put everything together but upon starting the computer it powers up for a couple of seconds then powers off and tries again. It doesn't seem to be posting (either using onboard graphics or graphics card). I have done the usual and disconnect just about everything and even with just the CPU in it does the same thing. I thought it might be the PSU, or the RAM but these have been tested in another PC and are working.

The CPU is pretty new (more so than the motherboard) and it says it is supported from BIOS version F5 (not sure how you check what BIOS a motherboard comes with if it doesn't post), but I have no way of updating this since there is no POST.

At this point it sort of looks like it may be a CPU or motherboard issue, but I have no other components to test either one out. I am guessing I may have to send both items back.

The specs are:

Intel i7-4771
Gigabyte - GA-Z87-D3HP
Corsair GS700 PSU
2x 4GB Crucial Ballistix

Any help or ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks very much!

Hello and welcome to the forum :)

I assume you have both the 8 pin for cpu power and 24 pin main ATX connector connected ok.

Also try a CMOS reset.

Hi.

Yeah, I have plugged in both the 24 pin and the 8 pin connectors to the motherboard. I haven't tried a CMOS reset, is this needed straight out the box? Also the PSU has been unplugged and disconnected for a while and no difference was made.

I always tend todo a CMOS as a matter of course, as I had a build did not post and mucking about did a CMOS reset and it worked a treat :D

Does the CPU fan spin up when it turns on for those few seconds? I remember mine did what you describe and I had forgot to plug in the CPU fan but that was me being a numpty.

Usuals are double check all connections, fans etc also the case possibly? Maybe try unplugging the case buttons and just short the power pins. One stick of RAM, different slots. Certain USB hardware but assuming as you mentioned unplugging everything you've tried that.

No thermal paste splashed on the mobo/cpu pins?

These are all just random things to try but as you've tried everything may be something basic you have missed! Replace PSU lead to the plug?

Thanks for the suggestions guys. CPU looks fine, no thermal paste or bent pins, fans spin for a couple of seconds then the thing restarts (so fans are connected okay) Might try a different case and see how that goes Nothing else was plugged in to the motherboard, no case USB or audio. RAM seemed fine in another machine and without the RAM installed it does the same thing.

You need a older cpu (4670k) to enable the system to boot, then update the BIOS.

Edited :)

Sorry - ignore that comment, I was talking as a whole rather than Haswell! :p

But the 4771 is newer chip compared with the 4670 or 4770k.

(How come you went with the 4771 rather than the overclockable 4770k)

Don't plan on overclocking at all, so it seemed to suit me fine. Does anyone know of a way to tell what version a Gigabyte motherboard BIOS might be from the box?

dont think the box will tell you anything more than the board revision. you'll have to put a compatible cpu in to update or replace the bios chip
