Hi,

Just finished refreshing my mini itx PC with one of the new AMD Hudson M1/E350 boards (the Gigabyte version) and it wont play any of my 1080p files

I've read just about every review online of boards using this chipset and they all said it will breeze 1080p and even does a decent job with some games, so where am I going wrong?

This is the first time I've installed a new mobo into anything but it all went without a hitch, it's running Windows 7 64bit with 4gb of RAM and it seems great in every other aspect but I'm a bit disappointed with video playback, I'm hoping it's something I've done/not done rather than a hardware problem.

Any ideas?

I've built a few of these now and you are correct,it's a case of waiting for lazy devs to update their media playing software.

XMBC works great in Win 7 however with Zacate boards, give it a try.

Thanks for the quick replies, could it be a DirectX issue? sorry for the daft question, bit of a noob at this.

Thanks. Just tried it and XMBC and still no better, can't find any driver updates anywhere either. Oddly, 1080p YouTube vids play fine.

OK.

Are they .MKV files you're trying to play?

Can you confirm it says "[DXVA]" in MPC-HC when you're playing a file? (look in bottom left corner)

Also can you load up task manager and look at the CPU usage while you're playing a file.

Have you installed any codec packs?

Ok for test purposes I've just tried running Iron Man 1080p .mkv in MPC.

[DXVA] was showing in the bottom left corner but it was a completely black screen.

CPU usage overall never got above 20% and for MPC process specifically never above 12%.

The other test file is Avatar 1080p .mp4 with exactly the same results as above.

In VLC both files play but are unwatchable.

Strangely I've just tried the bundled current version Windows Media Player and both files play with no problems. So I'm not sure what's going on.

Is there some software I can run to see what is or isn't happening, some sort of test/benchmark?

I'm wondering if there might be a problem with the PicoPSU as that was installed at the same time, I think I'll strip it back down and fit the original case PSU and see if things are any better.

I uninstalled MPC-HC that I got from the link above and downloaded the latest version that is listed on the MPC website (which strangely is an older version) and now all seems well, it plays everything. Bizarre.

I didn't realise the PicoPSU kicked out so much heat, it was warming the whole case to the touch!

I'm going to get a quiet fan and move the Pico with an ATX extension cable into the big space where the current PSU is, hopefully that should cool things down a bit.

Thanks for the help folks.

God knows, how do you do that? lol.

When using a mediaplayer, such as Windows Media Player, Cyberlink Power DVD. If you go to tools options you will see an option to use hardware acceleration, this will let the graphics chip help the cpu to play the movies at 1080p.

Same with youtube, if you right click on youtube video go to settings then click the far left monitor icon, enable hardware acceleration. tick the box.

also check your ati catalyst control settings under the options called Avivo.

Hope this helps

Thanks for that, checked VLC and GPU acceleration was unchecked, it now plays flawlessly on three different players so I'm guessing this issue is sorted now. Thanks a lot for the help.

On a lighter note,. I was pulling people off the side of buildings with a grappling hook all night last night in Just Cause 2 :D

Just had an ultra quiet fan and SSD through, so added with the PicoPSU it should be virtually silent soon.
