New build won't POST

Hi all

I'm having an issue with a new build. I'm using the Asus Sabertooth X58 motherboard and an i7 990x CPU. When the machine is powered up, the CPU error LED on the motherboard turns on and stays on, as does the memory error LED. I can't get it to post. I have a speaker connected and I'm definitely getting no beeps. Things I have tried :-

Replacement motherboard
Reseating CPU
Lots of combinations of RAM sticks
Swapping in a spare PSU
Assembling outside the case to eliminate possibility of shorts

I'm struggling to find a possible cause other than the CPU being faulty. Any ideas?

I guess the logical route would be to replace the CPU, but could it be the motherboard needs a BIOS update for this CPU to work correctly?

Check the 4/8 pin power cable is connected. Then download memtest and create a bootable device to test your ram

It seems that the CPU has been supported since November last year. It's a bit difficult to check what BIOS version it has though. If I had a spare socket 1366 CPU I might be able to test it, but I don't.

The 4/8 pin cable is connected. And if I could boot anything at all it would be much easier but I don't even get that far.
