system spec:
asrock x79-extreme9
8 x 4GB gskill ripjaw z 1600
3930k
msi 670 power oc
corsair ax850

when i power on the led stops on code 69. also the graphics card fan seems very loud and gets louder then longer the system is on.

i'm not sure this is the graphics card though as another one does the same. i suspect the memory or mb...

any ideas?

Download and run memtest from the boot disk image. Repeat for each memory module.

Are you overclocked? Try with stock settings.

Use MSI afterburner to set gfx fan speeds.

thanks for the reply, but my system doesn't even get to the post screen so can't run memtest.

not overclocking yet as it doesn't get to the uefi screen and haven't managed to install windows to worry about afterburner.

i was planning on setting a custom fan profile to quieten down the graphics card when windows is installed.

Silly question, reffering to your mobo manual, does it state what CODE 69 is ? or does it purely mean 69/100% loaded - There should be an LED debug section in there somewhere. May help you find out the problem/cause.

when i get a few minutes i'll start moving the memory around thanks - got to remove the cooler to get to it all :-(

code 69 is 'North Bridge DXE initialization is started'

the problem is getting into uefi to actually change anything.

hopefully the cpu voltage is correct at stock (as there are only 3 cpus for this socket).

(bring back the good old days where you move jumpers or switches to control that lot!)

What is the next code? 69 may have completed and it fails on next task.

progress :-)

with 4gb of ram it posts. it is using an xmp profile so voltages are correct. no overclocking yet.

windows 7 is installed and afterburner and the gpu is quiet now (at 35'c).

just got to find out if the ram is faulty or the motherboard now...

thanks for the help

ok, here is the update after a couple of hours of testing various combinations.

7 of the 8 dimms work in any combination in the 1st slot of each channel. 1 dimm will not work at all so i'll need to change the memory (not from ocuk).

but if the 2nd slot of channel a or c has a dimm in it then back to not posting. i didn't try channel b or d as i had to keep removing the cpu cooler.

what controls the memory in lga2011/sb-e? is there a chip on the motherboard or is it the cpu?

if it is the cpu then i might try reseating that too.

there isn't a uefi/bios setting that enables the 2nd slot for each channel is there? or a motherboard jumper or the like?

CPU.

Most likely no. My guess is you need to use it in dual channel mode, so at least two dimm per channel. So you'll have 6 dimms in use, one broken dimm, and one spare. Look up the manual to be sure of what combinations works.

i checked the manual and that was a little misleading. if this is the layout of the memory on the MB:

A1, A2, B1, B2, CPU, D2, D1, C2, C1

the manual says A1, B1, C1 and D1 then fill extra from left to right.

what i found is that A1, B1, C1, D1 would work but anything in addition in A2 would not post.

i tested A1, A2 and that worked so i left that and then added B1 and B2 and that also worked and i completed it by adding C1 and C2. i tried D1 too but that wouldn't work so i'll need a pair to get the full 32GB which means an RMA to get a whole new set.

the RAM came from elsewhere so i'll be taking that up with them on monday.

thanks for all the help :-)
