New build

Depends. Lots of people leave them out but if you're installing WinXP on a SATA drive you may need one for the drivers (though there're ways round that.)

I remember on my last computer I needed a floppy to install SATA drivers, but that was years ago!

Going to be installing Vista, so is that different?

cheers

I didn't get one for my new build as the motherboard can be flashed vis USB flash drives and I was able to use the USB drive to install the SATA drivers for Vista.

Not at all - plug in the USB and away you go. Its recognised as a USB drive, nothing to it. :D

Sorry to sound really dumb, do you need a USB flash stick with drivers on it?

You don't need any special drivers for the USB itself. All I did was copy the raid drivers and bios update files to it. The just pointed bios to the location of the file and it updated itself.

While installing Vista to add the raid drivers I just pointed it to the USB stick which had been assigned a drive letter as if it was permanent storage.

Ok mate, Ill see what happens when I come to it! lol

Hopefully order all my bits this week!

Before you order make sure you motherboard bios supports flashing from USB, just in case. :p

As long as I do what you said?

Or will just get on with things its self?

Follow my instructions. Copy the raid drivers you'll need during installation onto the USB stick and you'll be fine.
