In the next month im looking to order my new machine but i just need some advise on what to get.
I can spend about £1600, this includes vista with the w7 upgrade and all the small parts like HD and dvd writer.

Coolermaster HAF 932
1300 Watts Power Supplie
Core™ i7 920
CoolerMaster V8 Gaming CPU Cooling Fan
Asus P6T Intel X58 Chipset SLI/CrossFireX
6GB (3x2GB) PC12800 DDR3/1600mhz Triple Channel Memory
ATI Radeon HD 4870 X2 2GB DDR5 PCI-Express Dual DVI-I & TVO
ATI Radeon HD 4870 X2 2GB DDR5 PCI-Express Dual DVI-I & TVO

An interesting spec, I have a few recommendations if you are interested:

-Pre Order Windows 7 E (Home Premium - £70) and use the free Windows 7 Release Candidate till it comes out in October (much better than paying more and having to use the inferior Windows Vista for now till October).

- As super-fast new graphics cards are coming out at the end of the year- it doesn't make much sense to get two 4870X2s + 1200W PSU now. I suggest getting one of these or just a single 4870X2 for now and get this excellent PSU. Get one of the Top-end DX11 cards when they come out and sell the existing card.

- That ASUS board is grand - but for a bit extra this board is better laid out and has more options. This is very much my opinion as I have worked with the UD5 and my P6T deluxe and I far prefer the UD5.

-For cooler, this one + this fan is much better than the V8. If you want an all-in-one cooler - then this is pretty darn good.

-The HAF 932 is a lovely case.

One last thing, with such a lovely computer, have you got a monitor just as awesome to make good on the investment?

That's Patriot Viper, yes? It looks nice, the V8 isn't the best though, Get something like the Meglahems, or Thor's Hammer. The PSU is very overkill, 850W would suffice. Although don't you think that's overkill? I can't even name a game that supports more than two GPUs, in real world tests you aren't going to see a difference between that and one. You could even get a decent watercooling loop for the price of one if you didn't get it. Although then you might want a different case.

+1 to all this

DX 11 ?

1300w Quad GPU
I can see nothing wrong with what you have selected other than with DX11 coming out shortly, wouldn't it be better to hold off on a graphics investment of that size until later ?
Either re-use your current card, or invest a single 275 / 4890 which you can then re-sell when the new cards land ?

When do the new graphics card hit stores then?
I have a 4890 in my current machine now so i could put it into the new machine for now.
Also will the motherboard be able to take the new i series of processers when there released or is that something else i would need to upgrade?

The release date of the new cards has not been properly pinned down yet, but ATI are aiming for around the time of Windows 7 Release (22nd October). I have heard some rumors recently that the october lauch may be pushed back by a month. However, I would expect large quantities on the shelves by december.

As for Nvidia's new cards, I hear they are having trouble and will likely be out early next year.

If anyone has any more accurate, up-to-date info please correct me.

Depending on your resolution the 4890 should be able to max out most games until christmas, just keep it and wait for the next generation cards i'd say.

The P6T is an intel X58 socket 1366 board. The new gulftown 32nm, 6 core i9 will work with these boards :) They come out in the middle of next year, but it seems to be Extreme Edition only - so very high price tag. I'm hoping they produce some more affordable versions - but no word of them for s1366 yet.

Or were you referring to the i5 1156 chips ? I imagine that you'd more likely be looking at the i7 with that level of spec.

This is the chip I was referring to. Not exactly the most sane upgrade, but it certainly will be available if you REALLY need the extra processing power. If intel had any sense they would release a cheaper, multiplier locked version with a more reasonable price tag - then we would all be happy.

Agreed

I assumed that this is looking to be a 'God Box' quote. When you have a quad gpu setup he most likely is looking at the i9.

to be honest, this is my first machine where i have really had this much money to spend. All my other machines have been around the £900 mark so im looking to get the best machine i can that is going to last a good few years. The price of the i9 will be big at the start but if i want to upgrade the processer in a couple of years i would like to do it without changing half the parts in the case.
