Its my first post here so i thought i would say hi first, i work in IT but its been 3/4 years since i have done a fresh build for my self.

My home desktop has sadly past died, i got a good 3/4 years out of it and now im wanting to build a new desktop.

I have spec'd up the following unit, i dont do any sort of game playing, its mainly for downloading/web browsing and i wouldn't mind hooking it up to my TV and watching a few films.

i'm not looking to have the ability to overclock at this time.

This is the "first draft"

- Casecom Black Midi Tower Case - With 450W PSU 20+4pin with 1x SATA
- Gigabyte GA-P31-ES3G iP31 Socket 775 5.1 channel audio ATX
- MotherboardIntel Pentium Dual Core E5300 2.6GHz Socket 775 800FSB 2MB L2 Cache
- Corsair 4GB (2x2GB) DDR2 800MHz/PC2-6400 Memory Kit CL5 1.8V
- Sapphire HD 4550 512MB DDR3 VGA DVI HDMI HDCP PCI-E Graphics Card
- Western Digital WD5000AAKS 500GB SATAII 7200RPM 16MB Cache

My budget is only around £300

any comments or recommendations ?

Hi and welcome
Two immediate things, one I wouldnt recomend a case/psu combo like that, chances are the PSU is pretty poor standard, two I also wouldnt recomend a new build based on socket 775 which is End of Line, have a look at AMD

If you were willing to stretch to 350 oyu could even include a quad core athlon in there which would help with multi-tasking

the spec looks quite nice for my budget, i was going to comment saying there was no graphics card listed but i noticed the MB has an onboard ATI Radeon HD 4200 GPU.

is this sufficient to run Windows 7 or will i need to also get a seperate graphics card.

I'll admit things have changed a lot since i last did a new build and im a bit out my depth

hi there,

I'm going to be building a PC based on a similar spec to the above for my parents. I've been out of the game for a while so i'm unsure about onboard graphics capabilities these days.

You say the onboard here will be capable of running older games, well my Dad is into the command and conquer series, will they be capable of running the latest things? Such as C&C Kane's Revenge? or should he purchased a dedicated graphics card on top of the existing system? (he'd rather not have to).

thanks in advance :)
