i am hoping to build my first pc soon and have spent many hours trying to work out which route to take. I thought that I was going to go with the AMD 965 with a Crosshair III Formula motherboard.

Problem is that I keep hearing that the i5 is better and now dont know how to decide on which one to get.

So I put my faith in the gods of overclocking.

I have about £500 and need a case, cpu, motherboard, psu, ram, gpu and if it is needed then an aftermarket cooler.

I already have hdd, disc drive(2) and all peripherals.

It will mainly be used for media streaming and the odd bit of video editing but I do want as much power as I can get as I wont be able to upgrade for quite a while after this.

Thanks for your help.:)

Do you play any games at all? Just thinking in terms of a graphics card. Or would it just need to be powerful enough to stream hd media.

i5 and 965 are close but i think i5 somes out on top by a small margine but realy if you arnt going to overcloc i would go 955 saves money and wont notice the difference really or go i7 u might be able to do a i7 rig for that sort of money
mobo good but it is a over clocking mobo could cheapen that if you aint gona overclock at all
aftermarket coolers are generally only for either overclocking or silence
case is completly personal looks and needs
psu go corsair or ocz ocz might be better for your price range though
ram ddr3 dual for that mobo or i5 which should be something like the patriot sector 5 stuff heard its good
gpu you dont need anything fancy for your needs something like

should do you and its got cuda to help where it can

The one thing that I dont do is play games. The reason I want it powerfull is that on one of the films I wanted to stream it was going to take 60 hours to encode it first.

I may do some slight overclocking but have never done this before so still trying to find out how to do it. I am learning though.

that should do you mate i dont think i missed anything

its slightly over but you got a decent case in that you could cheapen
and that mobo got oc genie i thinks so should herlp on the overclocking basis
also the gpu got cuda to help with video
and you got a decent cooler in thrre for the oc

Thanks for that daniel bourton. Just wondering if i would see any difference between the 965 or the i5 as there is a 0.74 difference in speed. I would have thought that the AMD is faster, or am i missing something?

Thanks

clock for clock intel is faster also that board will oc it for you if you use oc genie to about 3.4/3.5 from what i hear
dont get me wrong there isnt a huge difference between the 2 though if you arnt going to oc

mind i am a little biased as i chose the i5 for my build

so if i did overclock the i5 to 3.4/3.5 would that be faster than an overclocked 965 at 3.8?

Basically i dont care which one as long as it is the best that I can get for my money.

Also, I have a gpu that I could use for a while (its not very good) and correct me if im wrong but I will only need an after market cooler if I am going to oc. That might be a few months yet. Would holding out on these items mean I can get a better kit or is it still about the same?

Thanks

what about this then? (i know i said £500 but i think i could stretch to a bit more):)

the above spec is over by 100 pounds but is a good spec if uyou afford it as the i7 has hyper threading which could help you a lot in thew apps you use i didnt get one as i ouldnt use the extra preformance it gives

Is every thing compatible though?

I will spend more if it can be justified, I just dont want to spend extra on something that I wont use (like a tv card).

thanks
