Hi all,

considering anew build as my current setup is fast passing it's sell by date.

My shopping list so far is:-

Cooler master HAF X Tower
Asus Sabretooth 990FX
Phenom II X6 1100T Black Edition (possibly an octo when they arrive)
Cooler Master V10
Cooler Master Silent Pro Gold 1000w (maybe slight overkill)

I need info on which would be the ideal memory and graphics card for this setup.

Would I really need a 1000w PSU?

My current OS is XP Pro 32bit, I did try Vista in the past but didn't really like it, would I be better off getting Win 7 64bit?

I do a lot of video editing, DVD burning, photo editing and I use MS Flight Sims FS9 & FSX.

All help would be greatly appreciated.

p.s. is there a way that I can work out the total power consumption that a build would use, I know that fans, cpu's etc.. show their rating but what about all other components?

Kind regards..,

MT

whats your total budget?
need anything else, monitor,kb,mouse?
and anything that can be reused from your current rig?

Welcome to the forums :)

As you do a lot of FSX then an Nvidia card is the best. What's your budget for graphics cards? What res do you play at?

for your RAM, any one of THESE will do :)

I would highly recommend you get win 7 64 bit as IMO, it is much better than XP and as it's newer will have better compatibility for newer games.

1Kw PSU is overkill, but that depends on your graphics card. If you can easily afford it, then I'd say keep it as it saves you upgrading you PSU constantly

I will keep my current monitor at the mo, an LG Flatron L1950SQ.

Don't need keyboard or mouse.

I forgot that I will probably buy new HDD's also.

Let's say, budget no issue.

Kind regards..,

I would love to play maxxed out in FSX at the highest possible FPS, XP struggles real bad with FSX, basically I have to turn everything off. Also there is the directx 10 issue, that's why I did try Vista as an upgrade but found that a lot of my other software would not run correctly.

Thanks for the power calc link.

LOL! never say that here!

Graphics card: GTX 590
HDD/SSD: OCZ revodrive 500GB

OK, what were my Lottery numbers again ;)

The GTX590 looks a nice piece of kit but seemingly like all these things someone else has another opinion mainly the AMD HD6990 still being slightly better, what your opinion.

Maybe the SSD is a future upgrade, their new right now, give it 6 months and bam! the price drops.

Kind regards..,

I have a V10 and its a good cooler, but its by no means the best, I find mine quite awkward when upgrading hardware.

You might be ok with it as you will be able to take it off easier in your case, I don't have a cpu mount hole in mine so I have to take the motherboard out.

I also had a problem fitting my ATX power conector (OCZ 1250w) under it so I had to order a more Flexible extension cable.

There are better alternatives, lots of people are going with Silver Arrows, Noctua D14s and the Corsair H series.

See, this is my current problem, I know nothing about SLI or Crossfire. ;)

SLI and xfire are just the names of running more than one card :)
SSD's are brilliant - there's no going back!
Earliest SSD prices are going to drop is next year when the new gens come out. Not worth waiting really.

If money is no issue, then SLI THESE

OR

THESE

The 6990 is better, but you need nvidia so the 590 is what I recommended. Two 580's is better though :)

Thanks for the tip, I'll have a look at the others you mention.

Two things,

1) sandy bridge chips are faster always.

2) you can buy the hafx with a psu that you can sell onwards to make money.

or he could keep it as a spare, for testing and stuff.

Cleeecooo, those green still look different.....and i take it your using green liquid for you build ?
