Building a PC for my dad and just wanted to check if there's any improvements to be made or money to be saved.

His main uses are photography editing in Photoshop and playing turn based games like Civ 5.

He's having the GFX card out of my old PC so that's why there isn't one.

Now, I only just built a PC myself with that CPU, I was thinking of giving him mine and getting a i7-4770K 3.50GHz for myself, my main uses are video editing and playing FPS like BF4, Crysis etc. Is it worth the extra £££? I'm aware of the upcoming refresh but he'll be ordering before they're out so it's stick with my i5 or upgrade to the i7-4770K.

Thanks in advance.

Is he going to be saving the photos onto the SSD? If he is you would be better off going down to a 240gb SSD and getting a 1TB SSHD for his photos. You could also drop the PSU down a bit if he is not going to be using a graphics card.

Personally I would really wait until the end of the month and use the i7 4790k. It's much higher spec , 4.4ghz turbo and the HT will really help with photoshop.

Can't recommend buying a i7 4770k new. If your dad does not want to overclock the maybe a non k might be enough ? Though lower clocked.

We've already a collection of internal and external hard drives, he'll be using one of them to store photos on. He will be using a GFX, my old one for now.

If that's the case I'll hold off then, I was just thinking it would make sense to let him have my i5 if it was worth getting an i7 for me, if the current ones aren't worth it I'll wait a few months and then see where they're at with the new 4790k's.

Yeah for the tasks your mentioning the extra grunt of the 4790K will be worth it, at the same current price of the lower clocked 4770K is now. So its really worth waiting if at all possible. :)

Cheers, will do. The i5 has been fine anyway so don't mind waiting, can play BF4 on high settings and be recording and still get 80-100 fps. Imagine it will be fine with video editing too.

Seems no one has any issues with the build I post for my dad so I'll get round to ordering it in a bit.
