Hi all, I'm building a PC for my son who wants to use World of Warcraft only.
I'll be getting some DDR4 ram from a friend so need help in choosing a motherboard/cpu combo.

Looking to spend around £300 on the mboard/cpu or less if that's overkill for his game.

I'd like usb 3.0 support and already have a large case that will take an atx and a 500w power supply.

Really confused on the different motherboards and cpu combo's and am worried I will buy ones that are not compatible.

dont know if you need a graphics card in that budget and not found one else where, but it should be good enough for that game and the processor is a 2 core 4 thread so be plenty also.

Total: £266.43

i havent played WOW since the panda expansion was released at which point i decided to get my life back rather than buy it ha, so i dont know how the newer ones fair, but from base game till the expansion before panda i was running it on a now old acer aspire 5740g laptop which had an i5 430m(2 core 4 thread), 4gb ram, mobility ati 5470 512mb(hyper memory up to 2.2gb) on high if not highest setting very well, if i had knew about fraps it likely wouldve shown over 50+ fps, it was that smooth in all areas, so with the parts i selected being much better then you should be fine no problem.

Exomale has got it about right. An alternative is an AMD Ryzen 3 1200 with a microatx B board.

This is approximately £100 for the CPU and £68-£80 for a B350 MB. 4c/4t for £10 less.

It was pointed out you will need a GPU if you don't have one.

Lastly, not all PSU were created equal. Send us what you are putting in (make and model number) to see if it needs to be replaced.

If you do need a video card as well, I would go with MSI H110M ECO motherboard (new £40), i5-6500/6600 (used, £105) and GTX 1050Ti 4GB (new, £140). There'd be a bit left over for a little cooler (£15) like the Raijintek Rhea or Arctic Cooling Arctic Freezer 7 PRO if the i5-6500/6600 doesn't bring one.

how advanced is that game now then? i know it used to be known as a CPU bound system which is why that laptop had ran so much better than a dell dimension 5000 with a 3ghz P4 that also had 512mb ram, x300 gpu at the time that i first started playing on which was terrible for the cities and built up areas of lots of players ha, but fine when alone.

And the recommended rig:

  • OS: Windows 10 64-bit with latest service pack
  • CPU: Intel Core i5-3330, AMD FX-6300, or better
  • GPU: Nvidia GeForce GTX 750 Ti or AMD Radeon R7 260X or better
  • RAM: 4 GB
Which means Ryzen 1200 which runs better then FX-6300 and I3 8100 which now has same core count at i5 3300 but runs at 3.6 vs 3.2 Boost along with DDR 2400+ Vs DDR 3 1600 should make those chips perfect !

@gazza9
can see how the gtx 1050 stacks up against the recommend spec of WoW legion GTX 750 Ti

and then vs gtx 1030

1030/1050/1050 ti/ rx 560

that for the new add-on im guessing then? i stopped following it and obviously a lot of that didnt exists at the time.

mean my haswell i3 performed well in games that needed quad core i5's even as a minimum, but i suppose for nearly £20 extra then might be worth going down the ryzen 1200 route

Thanks all, the psu I have already from an old build is a AntecNeo he430 430w psu.
I'll buy new ram as the ram from my friend was only ddr2
I will be buying a 1050 card, not sure 2gb or 4gb yet as 4gb is probably overkill for his World of Warcraft.
I'll also go the AMD route as it seems to be cheaper too so will look at the combos you guys have mentioned.

Prime A board listed above doesn't allow CPU to be overclocked. ryzen does need to be overclocked across all cores and then it performs well :)

Im guessing they must have done like a steam survey of peoples hardware and saw they could dump up the visuals to match other MMO

Not anymore since the Legion expansion.

The Recommended System Specifications set by Blizzard are somewhat misleading when it comes to the GPU. The recommended GPUs are good, but you can only expect to get up to 40-45 FPS, probably lower on average. We recommend a beefier graphics card for 60FPS, especially if you are doing most of your adventuring in the newer areas! For those who are playing on 1440p or 4K resolutions, you will need significantly more graphical power than an RX 460.

Recommended GPUs for World of Warcraft
The graphics card you pick depends a lot on what resolution you are playing. The RX 460 would be fine for 900p, but you should consider a GTX 1050 TIor RX 470for 1080p.

As usual, the minimum and recommended (by game maker) is pretty low, because they want as many as possible to buy/play the game.

There are game capture vids showing Legion being played on all settings. Even on setting 5 out of 10, a GTX 1050Ti can tank into the 40s quite regularly. And the higher the setting, it can assign over 3GB VRAM.

Sure you can play low settings but you can go with medium settings on a 1050Ti.
