hi guys start of i have posted once b4 exact problem.but heres the over view and updates been done since last post.start off with whats under the hood.:)

PSU HIPPER 730WATT TYPE R
CPU- INTEL CORE 2 DUO E6750,2.66 NOT CLOCKED
2GB OF DDR2 KINGSTON HYPER X
ATI 4870 512MB
MOBO-ASUS P5Q-E
WITH 1TB SAMSUNG SATA AND 500GB WESTERN BLUE SATA

Heres the problem everytime i run a game for 30-40 min my games freeze up sometimes back to windows. now my video drivers are up to date infact ive tryed older ones too. so i have benchamrked the system useing 3DMARKS 06 AND PC WIZARD 2010 (ONLY TO STRESS OUT THE SYSTEM) thinking i could get a lock up again i dont! it passes no problems from testing cpu to vga to power to direct x and whole system. both apps complete with no crashes.yes if i run streetfighter 4 benchmark it freezes.:( and of course games in general. now i have ran windows 7 to start off that gave me issues sais somert about display error or dx. after the game freezes now im back with xp i do not get errors but i get the freezing lockups.
any help would be good thankyou.
i am wondering if it could be my psu as it is old now 2007 think and was bought off someone.cheap and have read there not the best but the psu was running a gts 8800 b4 i had it fine but we talking 320mb card here not ati 4870

Hi
The fact its only happening during gaming would indicate a gfx problem (probably) due to this is the most gfx intensive time. Theres 2 possible causes, gfx card itself and PSU as you've alluded to. First thign first is to download GPUz and run this in the background next time you run a game, make sure you have the "log to file" box checked, this will monitor the temperatures of your gfx card. When it crashes reboot and load the log file and check the temps, if theyre too high (>100) then this is the problem. The other thing you can try is with the side of your case off, look closely at the gfx card, theres a series of small red LEDs near the top corner, again when it crashes look and see if any of theses have come on, if they do look closely they should be labelled, then google that code, eg D601 etc. If it is a faulty PSU (not supplying enough amps or unstable etc) youll prob get the LED corresponding to critical power failiure.
Good luck

TOP MAN. i will try each these however something i should mentioned i have tested 2 cards 1 was ati 4870 1gb b4 the 512 that was brand new but locked up b4 game got in too heavy i think for the psu.and vga i have running now was from my old system witch been running for almost year with no problems untill this custome build. but the other things you mentioned i will be doing thanks again ill report back ASAP.cheers

UPDATE ok i have install run the gpu looking also for the signs of the leds errors codes.
i first ran resident evil 5 benchmark that more or less froze. loked for the leds i see were they are but no lights come on.so i rebooted looked at the log file.this wot showed up
