New Built Power Issue

Howdies!

I've been maccing it up for a few years and wasn't aware of the change from 4-pin 12v ATX connectors to 8-pin 12v EPS. I just brought a few bits (2500k w/ Z68 mobo) and chucked them in my old case with it's Enermax Noisetaker 600w (from circa 2005).

Obviously it won't boot as my old PSU still has a 4-pin 12v connection and the z68 needs 8-pins (or I think that's the reason). I was planning on dropping some big dollar on a hefty PSU nearer Christmas, but can't really fork out for one at the moment. I've read around and I've seen it suggested that it should work if I just connect the 4-pins to the half of the connector that they fit on, but that it can be a bit risky. I've also seen that there are 4 to 8 pin connectors for sale (http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CB-063-AK) which is a possibility. Obviously if it's just a case that my PSU is way too old to be useful in the build then I'd shell out for a cheapy one to tide me over until later. In which case I was looking as something like the Cooler Master Elite Power 500w, or the Corsair CX 430. It's literally just a 1 GPU and 1 HDD machine, so I don't think wattage would be a big issue (or am I wrong?)

Any advice would be appreciated.
 
I'm using a Gigabyte Z68XP-UD3.

I've just tried it with the 4 pin and no joy. It beeps, CPU fan spins for a second, then stops. Then a few seconds later it repeats the process once, then stops.
 
I took the mobo out of the case to see if something might have been shorting it. Also went down to 1 stick of RAM and tried it in another slot. No joy. Same thing, no beeps, CPU fan comes on a second, then off, then it repeats a couple of times and stops. I plugged the PC speaker in to see if there would be any diagnostic beeps, but nothing.

The PSU fan runs continuously.
 
Yea, I've just taken out the CPU and reseated the cooler, reseated the RAM and reset the CMOS.

I'm trying it without the hard disk and using the onboard graphics. Same thing. Baffled!
 
I'm hoping it's the PSU, as the motherboard is brand new, and the power supply has been sat in a draw for the past couple of years.

I'm gonna grab that 4 to 8 pin adapter tomorrow and see if that makes any difference.
