Got the new rig up and running and she's exceeded all expectations

Spec:

Mobo - Gigabyte DS3
CPU - E6300
RAM - Geil 1Gb PC6400
Case - Akasa PC62
PSU - Tagan TG530-U15
Cooling - Arctic Freezer 7 Pro
HDD - old 80Gb IDE I had lying around

Overclocking:

Rig is currently stress testing (Orthos Gromacs test) at 450x7=3150MHz at 1.325V (yes folks - that's a 69% overclock at STOCK volts  ).

I actually started off at 1.45V as recommended in a couple of threads in the overclocking forum and had it to 460. I couldn't get any higher though - I'm almost certain it's the RAM holding me back (it is running considerably higher than it was intended to).
After I hit the limit of the RAM, I knocked it back to 450 and started reducing the Vcore (I actually had it running small FFTs at 1.30V for 10 minutes before it crapped out).
I ran small FFTs for a couple of hours with no problems at 1.325V and am now running the Gromacs test for a couple of hours (no problems so far).

I'm certain there's a lot more in this chip but I'll have to get some faster RAM to find out (which I will :D ).

Temps:

Idle - 25 -26C
Gromacs test - 35-36C
Small FFT test - 37-38C

I am very, very impressed with this setup and look forward to getting some faster memory to push it to it's limit (whatever that may be - if it can do 3150 at stock volts, who can say how far it will go?).

You can rest assured it will be Folding before the night is through, I just want to run the Gromacs test for a while to make sure it's stable enough.

Stan :)

Makes you feel all warm inside don't it!

So how long till you replace all the other rigs with C2D's? :p :D

Got a feeling my old P4 will die soon (as far as the missus is concerned anyway) ;)

Certainly does (although some of that may be the Glenlivet :p ).

I'm actually planning on waiting until the Kentsfields come out and selling off all the A64s and replacing some of them with quad cores - a lot less PCs/power consumption for the same/more output (I'll probably keep the C2Ds, as they're damn good rigs).

What she doesn't know, won't hurt her, eh? ;)

I've got the same thing arriving tomorrow, except with a ninja rather than that cooler.

Hope you have as much fun with your's as I'm having with mine :)

I have the Ninja on my E6600 but it doesn't seem to perform as well as the Arctic 7 - a damn sight more awkward to fit for starters.

It's quite a good cooler (it has my E6600 running at about 50C at full load with 1.50V through it) but I would say that for ease of use and cooling, the Arctic gets my vote.

Go on Stan, gimme one of your X2s! You have a beast of a conroe rig there, you don't need it :D

Heh, I get my student loan in a few weeks, I suspect I will be upgrading :D

Im still waiting for the TT120 to come into stock!!!

P5B won't do anything under 400mhz lol so im stuck at 400x7 = 2.8ghz @ 1.25V

3.2Ghz at 1.35V on stock cooler, but it hits over 65C and crashes :(

Ah well, GL ;)

Yea... thats great PPD that is.... (PC2 = 100% of one core, PC1 = 50% of one core)

Oh crap, I'm so stomped in about a week lol

Should be able to get a good clock on this rig as its water cooled, so 3.6 and above should be achievable. Add dual X1950 xt-x's and this should pump out some good points for the cause.

Gah, I need money NOW!

My student loan could be weeks away, by that time i'll probably have been stomped by everyone else and be the lowest ranked farm cruncher :(

'man can not live on cruching alone' Stephen 16:58

You do realise that your student loan is not really designed for IT equipment upgrades, and that student debt is a serious matter. (ok end of lesson)

These nothing wrong in aiming high, but be content with what you have. I myself only own one rig (2k a week) - borged the rest of my output

What do you think I used to pay for my current rig?

I always get more than I need anyway. Besides, whether I spend the money or not, I still have to pay it back! So I might as well spend it :D

SiriusB

we'll have to agree to disagree on this point - but I have issues with debt so never took any students loans, on the other side I didn't need to pay any 'top-up' fees so count myself lucky.
Btw I finished a five year uni course with only a £1500 intrest free overdraft maxed, but it was hard at times.

I don't have to pay top-up fees either, just got in before the government thought it would be a great idea to do it.

Also, the student loans these days are very very good. I only pay it back when I earn at least 15K and even then the repayments are only a few % of my earnings each week. And whats more, as of this year the government will write off any owed money after 25 years.

If I am ever gonna get a loan in my life I think this is the best one I could ever have. I don't intend to get a bank loan in my life because I don't know anyone who hasn't regretted getting one.

But yeah, we shall agree to disagree. :)

Well I'll agree to disagree with both off you.

A Uni loan is probably the best loan you will ever have because of the very lenient interest rates and repayment model.

Credit is a part of life, hence your credit rating needs to be nurtured from an early age so that you can utilise it later. Credit ratings can be massaged early if you know what you are doing.

Sirius, you WILL be using bank loans in your life, whether that is to build a business or to own your own home, it will happen. Also, you know plenty of people with loans that they have benefited from, the house you grew up in had a mortgage didn't it?

As for your upgrade, if you can afford it and it makes you happy then go for it.

Ah, bar a mortgage then I'll be avoiding bank loans. A mortgage tends to be a fact of life if you want to own your own home, but I am talking about loans for things like a car or a holiday and so on.

At the moment if I can't reasonably afford something I wont buy it. Yes I'll be using loan money to pay for my upgrade, but I also work so in the end everything gets "replaced" so to speak :D

So far I have managed my finances very well and I have no suprises and I have had to give up few luxuries. I always have money hanging around for a rainy day too so I'm not completely irresponsible! :p

SiriusB

I agree if your ever going to take a loan, this is a good bet (had friends buy cars with one, and beat bank rates hands down) Even had one friend invest his (made 7k profit over 3 years lucky sod)

and my wife has 12k debt in students loads (not that she's ever going to work now we've got kids, <her choice> so will be writen off in 15 years time :D )

If I'd taken one, I wouldn't be able to pay the morgage now, and we'd be renting still so it worked for me, that's all. And from your many posts I actually think your quite senceable so I'll stop sounding like a old man and get back to crunching some Wu's. ;)

Edit: @ 2bullish - morgage=mega loan (6x my salery, but repayments less that rent ;) ) being an architect has some advantages
