Hi,

I got my new c2d today and installed it E6550 and put the stock heatsink on with the pre-applied paste and its running around 40C according to coretemp in idle and when running othos for 5mins its hittin 65C.

I turned it off then as I didnt know if 65C is ok, I did have some a chew on installing the fan, it didnt go on first time but its on very secure now so dunno if 5mins of me trying to install the fan would affect the paste.

I should say it is very hot in my room at the moment with the sun coming straight in via the loft window.

Any help appreciated.
thx
Mike

65 should be fine, if you want peace of mind check the heatsink and refit it/re paste, as its the push in pins make sure they slot through the mobo before you lock them in place.

What cooler are you using?
I usually ignore absolute temps as they generally mean nothing and go with relative temps if someone is good/geeky enough to know their ambient room temp :) As a rough guide, last night my room was at roughly 24C (don't worry, I'm not that thorough, it was just on my wallclock ;)), and my e6600 was running at 29-30C idle but never hotter than 45C, even under load. That is with a Scythe Infinity and 120mm fan to cool it. As a secondary guide, my server runs a e6400 and is currently in a cupboard with the door closed so the temps in there will be considerably higher than ambient. CPU is under very light load (varying from 3-15%) and CoreTemp shows me 42C, and that's with a Scythe Ninja and 120mm fan.
With a heavily sunlit room, you can expect ambient temps to get to 32-34C and sometimes higher if you have a lot of gear on, so assuming your idle temp of 40C is only 10C above ambient at most and you are using a stock cooler, that sounds about right. 65C is OK for load temps too.

hi, just to update, I installed xp coz i wasnt keen on vista at the moment. Well now after a day or so of the system running I seem to be having idle temps of around 20C and load temps of around 36C/40C. Might of being the beta of coretemp giving incorrect times. I even turned the pc on earlier and was abit scared since the cpu fan didnt turn on, I then realised cpu was running at 17C, the cooler must only turn on when it gets to a certain temp.
