Hey guys,

I have a 500D and fancy upgradeing and I need your advice, would you go with a 600d a 60D, 7D or a 5D MKII?

I went from a 500D to a second hand 5D (classic) - they actually compliment each other very well. The 500D is small, light and can do a bit of video and the 5D is a full frame beast.

Going to another XXXD body would be a waste of time imo so I'd definitely be looking at the 60D and probably more likely the 7D or 5DII.

What do you shoot/would like to shoot and what lenses have you got?

I have a 50mm 1.8 (I love that lens), the kit lens, Sigma 10-20mm f4-5.6 and the Canon 55-250 (been trying to find what I like doing so I haven't lashed out on a more costly lens)

I like to do a bit of everything if im honest (I'm one of them people who just walk about with there camera and try to capture the moment) but I mostly like landscapes and portraits nothing sporty but I would like the camera to have a good auto focus... So I was leaning more towords the 7D but I noticed the 60D has 18MP and wonderd if its as good as the 7D just with out the faster memory cards?

**EDIT
I want one that can handle high ISO well for them night time walks.

Well, the 7D, 60D, 600D and 550D all have the same sensor, so IQ with identical lenses and ISO performance will be pretty much indistinguishable. However, the features of the bodies are very different.

For example, the 550D can burst at 3.7fps, the 60D at 5fps (I think), and the 7D at 8fps. The 7D uses Compact Flash cards, whereas the other 2 use SD cards. The 7D also has a totally new AF system, supposedly the best Canon do (outside of the 1D bodies).

I was debating this decision myself earlier, and this video helped with the comparison

Well, landscape and portraits lead you towards the 5Dii. But on the other hand you have a couple of EF-S lenses that aren't going to work on it so the 7D might work out a lot cheaper for you.

In regards to the AF, you read a lot online about how terrible and prehistoric it is on the 5D. All I can say is it works absolutely fine for me and I kinda wonder what all the fuss is about.

Well, the 5D AF system is still more advanced than the 500D's. I've played about with a 5D classic, which I believe has the same system as the mk2, and it was better than my 30D.

I forgot about the lens issue, I watched that video as well and it looks like 550D / 60D and 7D are all as good as each other, but then 60D buttons ant as nice but I have 2 32gb SD cards so that would save me money.. and the burst mode I dont use.. but then again the 7D is more of a pro built camera *pulls hair out* lol

Money aside, what would you go with.. a 7D or a 60D? I want a camera that should last me a while now and produce image quailty that is noticeably diffrent from my 500D.

I have to agree here... No point in going XXXD to another.

The only response I have to this (and I agree with you) is that people made do with this AF system when the 5D classic was one of the top cameras in its group, AND they took stunning pictures. Yes, its not advanced as it is today, but it will still be worth a look! :)

Image quality on either camera won't be much different to the 500D. The only real differences will be a higher MP count and probably a marginal bit better high ISO. Glass will make the key differences in IQ.

Personally, I chose a 7D, but I have reasons for that. I shoot sports and motorsport, so the fast focus and 8fps is beneficial. I also can't get on with the xxxD bodies. The first DSLR I owned was my 30D, which is a chunky, metal bodied camera. After using it for nearly 2 years, the xxxD cameras feel flimsy and lightweight in comparison, but that's purely preference.

Consider that the 500D weighs in at only 480 grams, whereas the 7D is close to double that at 820 grams! It's also quite a bit bigger a body, so the best advice I can give is pop down to a local camera store and try them both out. Honestly, because the sensors are identical, the IQ between the 550/600/60/7 are all pretty much on par, its just that as you go up in price you gain extra features. If you don't think you'll make use of them, spending the same money on good lenses will provide a far better IQ increase.

I hope that's explained a bit!

Thanks guys, after a lot of thinking I'm going to save up a bit more and grab the 7D and some good lenses would you recomend the Canon EF 24-105mm f/4.0 L IS USM Lens?

With the 7DII/5DIII rumours flying about at the moment it might pay to wait/spend on glass.

The 24-105 is a fine lens, but a bit long on a crop sensor body for a general purpose zoom. I use my 17-40 f4L on the 500D which gives a nice equivalent range of roughly 27-64mm.

I find everytime I listen to the rumours I end up having a long wait! lol I'm half way saved so next month sometime if there is no release date then I'll just pick up a 7D body with a memory card.

I was looking at the lens for a all round lens, It would give me 50mm - 80mm and higher for when i need to zoom in a bit.. The lens you use sounds intresting, but I like the 80mm kind of range but I think I need to think of what I want to focus on more and pick one of the two on that.

I went from a borrowed 550D to a 60D recently and have to say I do not regret it one bit. I was considering getting a 550D myself but after handling the 60D I loved it. Although the IQ from the two will be the same, I found the 60D has significant advantages (such as way more hardware buttons, articulating screen etc.) and all of these things which may seem relatively minor add up and I find it a much more comfortable camera to use. I no longer find myself trawling through menus to find the option I want. I also think it is a much more customisable camera than the xxxD bodies and it just feels so much more solid in the hands. My personal recommendation would be to go for the 60D + a nice lens as, in my opinion, the 7D is lacking a little on some features that I would find valuable (such as the articulating screen) and some people have found that the 60D has had better noise performance than the 7D (don't quote me on that though!).

Hey Guitarman0, I was going to go with the 60D but then I spoke to my dads friend and he said to pick the 7D and then sent me this http://www.whatdigitalcamera.com/equipment/advice/504575/canon-eos-7d-vs-canon-eos-60d.html they say that the 7D handles noise better
To be honest I have seen so many places saying one or the other is better I reckon it just comes down to how good your specific one happens to be as both cameras seem to have almost identical noise performance and any difference in noise will be minimal.

True, as the sensors are effectively the exact same. Obviously, as with pretty much all batch produced electronics, there will be tiny differences, but nothing that makes an real difference.

I chose the 7D over the 60D because of the feature set, nothing more. I prefer the feel of a heavy metal body, I prefer having a better burst speed, and I found the AF system in the 7D to be so far ahead of the 60D.

All this is IMO, of course.
