Dams spelling mistake in title..... :p

I know I did a thread about this a week or 2 back now but Ive finally decided 100% to treat myself to a new camera for next months holiday to vegas!!

Ive been looking around what is just a mass of cameras out there, so many pro's and cons with them all, I just cant decide!!!!

First of all SLR is out of the question for me I feel, I cant raise the cash for one and I dont think i really have the need to have one!

My budget for a new camera is ~£200 really.

Id like 10x optical zoom or more too as I do try to get to race events and sports events where I possibly can.

There are 3 main 18X zoom cameras on the market at the moment and all appear to be flawed inn the fact they have impressive zooms but cant produce impressive noise free shots!!

While shopping about ive come across the Canon S5 IS which looks a great complete package? Has anyone got thoughts on this camera? This is the body style of camera id prefer but its not got to be. MrSix just suggested the Lumix TZ3 which in terms of spec look good also.

I just need to know if the canon is a good camera to go for or not?

I currently have a Kodak DX7590 so obviously want better than this.

Memory type not fussed but have a few gigs of SD at the moment, batter pack would also be preferred but again not essential, the Canon takes AA's which I felt was its only downfall.

Any help, hints, advice is much appreciated on this matter.

Any other questions please ask me! I really want to get a camera to last me a good few years now! Sorry for yet another what camera thread :p

if low noise is waht you after consider something like the fuji 6500 it's getting a bit long in the tooth now but has 10x optical zoom and very good image quality.

I'm pretty happy with my Canon S5 IS, though as soon as Canon release a G series with a flip-out LCD I'll be back to that; I think the image quality is better on the Gs and they have more features I find useful. Check out my website for some example shots if you like...the Slovenia, Italy, Spain and ones at the bottom of the UK page were taken with the S5, most of the rest with a G3. The S5 doesn't have an optical viewfinder so that probably won't help if you want to do race events.

What do you mean by optical viewfinder mate? As opposed to an EVF you mean? Just about to take a look at the pics now thanks :)

Alex, do you also have a link to a few full res pics mate? Preferably ones that havent been touched in photoshop?

EDIT: Just come across a new release from Fuji in the form of the upcoming S1000FD. Looks a lot of camera for £40 less than the Canon? Anyone heard much about this camera? There isnt yet a review on dpreview but im keeping a lookout :)

My dad has an S2 and I have a TZ3. Bought the TZ3 for going travelling so needed something light but with good reach for the best range of shots. Whilst they are both awesome in different ways the number of times I wish the TZ3 had some manual controls is probably going to outweigh the number of times I'm glad of the TZ3s size (excluding this trip!)

If you are at all into photography you can't go wrong with the S5. The S series is a great bridge cam. Whilst your at it have you checked out the Fuji (9600?)?

Yes ive got it down as a possible but I am waiting for a review to come avaliable for this new fuji coming out, its relatively cheap for the spec on it! It can be had for 185 which is 40 quid cheaper than the canon.
