Hi there,

My wife's camera lens has finally given up the ghost and we need a replacement. It was a 70-300 tamron that she uses with a 350d. she was happy with the quality of pictures it took. Apparently the wires inside have broken and this is quite common ? It was a 'tamron af 70-300mm 1:4-5.6 ld. Tele-macro(1:2)'

Requirements are:

- needed by absolute latest Thursday this week.
- similar/same flexibility that the 70-300 gave
- at least that picture quality which she had before
- would be good if it could macro but not essential
- under £200 delivered, ideally less, she isn't an 'I've got an slr so I'm now a professional photographer' It's for fun as a hobby and family photos. If we can spend £130 and have something good enough that will do nicely !

All recommendations welcome !

The rainforest shop sell that 70-300 lens for £126.50. They usually run like clockwork so if you order today you should almost certainly have it by Wednesday if not Tuesday. If she was happy with it then why not just get another one? I know it failed but it ticks all the boxes and I'm pretty sure the Tamrons come with a long warranty - it was something like 5 years on my 17-50.

If that is true, the I would be tempted to go for that as well. You know what you are getting and it is well within your price range (you can even spend the extra to guarantee delivery by the next day).

+1 on the 55-250mm.
Not as long range but apparently better quality, and if you buy 2nd hand it's about £110.
Mine's been brilliant and takes good shots. The IS is really helpful as well.

Canon 55-250 as has been mentioned, better IQ, addition of image stabilisation, wider end is arguably far more useful than the long end on the Tamron.

thanks for the replies guys. The wife is very interested in this 55-250 as it would mean less faffing swapping lenses over !

recommended place to buy one from?

Second hand so either the bay or the members market on this or other forums such as TP, I would be loath to buy any camera gear brand new having enjoyed a few second hand deals!

AVForums also has lots of secondhand stuff. There's a guy selling a 500D (I think) and two lenses, including the 55-250. Ask if he'll separate?

prefer brand new tbh guys.

Just realised, epic fail, we are flying from heathrow, surely there is a cheap camera shop there!?

Flying out of Terminal 3

They had an electronics store in Terminal 5 a few weeks back. Had several lenses but I don't know if they had the 55-250. Maybe just phone them up and ask them to order it for that site - then pick it up when you go. How many days have you got?
