Hi guys,

I'm looking to replace my ageing Panasonic DMC-FZ50 in the coming weeks in preparation for my venture to the US. The camera has served me well for a few years now but I feel I could get more from a new camera. Moving shots with my daughter it really is disappointing so I'd be looking for a camera that can capture shots whilst she's tearing around.

My budget is around £500.

I'm not really into the whole Photography scene so a camera that is easy to setup and use straight away is what I'm after.

I'm after a DSLR ideally, the difference in quality between my FZ50 and my wifes fancy new Samsung Compact Camera is quite something.

Thanks

Andy

Or the cheaper Nikon D3100, there's also a Nikon offer of cash back of £30 on it, I just picked one up myself a few weeks back, it's a nice first DSLR from what I can tell, full auto works great, comes with a decent kit lens and you can pick up a decent 35mm prime lens for £150 at a later date or at the same time with a budget of £500 and leave you enough for a half decent flashgun, reviews speak quite highly of it as well and I have to agree with them, it's an ideal first DSLR.

I think it's downfall is when using it to video and the inbuilt mic picks up the sound of the autofocus motor, but I knew this from reviews and I knew I had no plans for video anyway.

Thanks for the suggestions. I will be using it only for pictures so not fussed about the video side, I like the idea of the 650D but with accessories I think that will be near £600 with a lens obviously?

I will look into the other ones.

RX100 will basically give you midrange DSLR quality but in a compact. Also it will be better for video in terms of autofocus, less noisy focusing, and the lens is stabilised.
