New firmware for canon 5d3 is out and about.

officially out April 30

AFAIK, the following is what they are updating:

✔ Uncompressed HDMI Output Support
When shooting video, HDMI Output makes possible the recording of high-definition uncompressed video data (YCbCr 4:2:2, 8 bit) from the EOS 5D Mark III to an external recorder via the camera’s HDMI terminal.

✔ This enhanced capability facilitates the editing of video data with minimal image degradation for greater on-site workflow efficiency during motion picture and video productions.

✔ Video being captured can be displayed on an external monitor, enabling real-time, on-site monitoring of high-definition video during shooting.

✔ Improved AF Functionality – Even when the EOS 5D Mark III is equipped with an extender and lens making possible a maximum aperture of f/8, the firmware update supports AF employing the camera’s central cross-type points (currently compatible with maximum apertures up to f/5.6).

✔ This firmware update will allow users to take advantage of AF when shooting distant subjects, benefitting sports and nature photographers, particularly when using telephoto lenses.

Word on the street is that "Canon 5D Mark III firmware update will also come packed with several bug fixes. One of them will allow the camera to focus faster when using the Speedlight AF Assist Beam, while other details remain unknown for now".

Small issue with third party batterys

Just to report on the latest firmware 1.2.1 for 5D3, looks like it's no longer able to detect the 3rd party LP-E6 battery level anymore.

When I put my 3rd party LP-E6 (bought from eBay) into the camera, there's a warning screen that says:

Communication with Canon LP-E6 battery is Irregular. Continue to use this battery?

If I choose Cancel, the camera will turn off instantly. If I choose OK, the camera will turn on & run as normal, but the battery level will stay at 100% all the time & I can no longer register nor delete the serial number.

This is kinda bummer for me as I just bought 18 DSTE-branded LP-E6s & I'm expecting it to arrive next week. If the DSTE-branded LP-E6s can't show the battery level, I'll be very disappointed.

Anyone else have this problem as well?

Not tried it yet. need to buy a plug adapter as i lost my one :( my charger is from HK so no UK plug

This makes me happy, thanks for the news, I'd not have known otherwise (so soon :p).

About time! It's been a long time coming. I won't be flashing this until it's official.

The video improvements do nothing for me personally, but any improvements to the already amazing AF are welcomed. I'm also interested in the other 'unknown' improvements, but I suspect these to be minor.

Pretty annoying about 3rd party batteries. Seriously, Canon? It will take a bit of time to reverse engineer a new battery circuitry to bypass this new check. But it will happen and China will be pumping them out sooner or later.

Can confirm 3rd party battery. My Amazon ones show up with the caution message but they still work fine. They're only as backup anyway though so no major issue until the final firmware is out.

I think I'll DL it from the official site.

Will there be an option of backing up the current FW during the update, so I could reinstall it, if my third party batts didn't work with the new FW ?

Reading more in to the battery issue, it seems that it's only 'dumb' batteries causing the message and failing to show remaining capacity. Those 3rd party batteries that are decoded with a reversed engineered circuit appear to be okay from what I've read.

Think I'll wait until tomorrow just incase I brick my camera and the file dates are different so they have an excuse not to fix it :D

I'm having enough problems as it is :p

I'd be more interested in the improvement to the AF than the battery issue since I don't have any 3rd Party batteries, ever since it came out (5Dii), the first batch of 3rd party batteries didn't even show up in the battery guage for the 5Dii so never got one and stuck with an official one...now I have 5.

I'm having enough problems as it is without adding to my woes. My shoulder is knackered at the moment and I have either tendinitis or arthritis in my right hand so I have no strength.

You wouldn't believe how hard it is to take a photo without ruining images with camera shake :(

I updated mine today with no problems.

As a bonus my newly bought 3rd party batteries also work fine! Shall be ordering a few more of them if they hold their capacity well.

Just updated mine when I got in. No problems and the weird focusing issue I had over the weekend seems to have gone too. No idea what that was, but I hope it doesn't come back/was fixed by this :D

Just updated mine no problems :)

Also can confirm that the Canon EF 100-400mm L coupled with a Canon 1.4X converter does now autofocus and quite snappily too :)

The update rectifies the following

1.Uncompressed HDMI output is now enabled.
2.Enables the center AF point to autofocus when the camera is used with Canon EF lens/extender combinations whose combined maximum aperture is f/8.
3.Improves the speed of the camera’s acquisition of focus when using a Canon Speedlite’s AF-assist beam.
4.Fixes a phenomenon in which the LCD monitor may freeze and display Err 70 or Err 80 when a still photo is taken during Live View or in movie shooting mode.
5.Fixes a phenomenon that may occur when the continuous shooting priority setting is enabled for multiple exposures, such that, after the sixth image is taken, there is a slight pause before the remainder of the sequence is completed.
6.Fixes a phenomenon in which the viewfinder display shows incorrect information during AEB shooting.
7.Communication with the WFT-E7 Wireless File Transmitter has been improved.
8.When images have been successfully transferred with the WFT-E7 Wireless File Transmitter through the FTP protocol, an “O” will be displayed. When images have not been successfully transferred with the WFT-E7 Wireless File Transmitter through the FTP protocol, an “X” will be displayed.
9.Fixes a phenomenon in which the camera may not function properly when an Eye-Fi card is used.
10.Fixes a phenomenon in which the focal length value listed in the Exif information is not displayed correctly for images shot with the EF 24-70mm F4L IS USM lens.
11.Fixes a phenomenon in which the lens firmware cannot be updated properly.
12.Corrects errors in the Arabic language menu.
13.Fixes a phenomenon in which the camera changes the AF microadjustment value to -8.
14.Fixes a phenomenon in which the on-screen guidance cannot be fully displayed when setting the maximum limit value for the “Setting the ISO Speed Range for Auto ISO” option.

If you want to download it (and the latest DPP, EOS Utility etc. software, which they recommend you do) you can find it at
