Hi all,

For a while I've been using my PC exclusively with headphones for gaming. I had some Technics RPF-350 cheapass jobbies from eBay. I though they sounded pretty decent for the cost (£20 iirc). I didn't think it would be worth the bother spending more, but I got curious.

A short while later, on a complete whim, I bought some ancient (but damn fine) Yamaha HP-1's (which apparently cost uber money in the 80's). These are fine for my hifi downstairs, but as they have a 1/4" plug and take a bit of juice to drive them well, I couldn't use them with my PC.

So off to the 'Bay I went and spied a couple of brand new pairs of AKG K141 Studios. I put a bid in and got a pair for £27 (retail from £50-80) all in

They're awesome compared to the old Technics cack, incredible bass definition and detail and no problem with sibilance. I put the hissy, spitty cackness of the Technics down to the fact that I was listening to mp3's (I normally look on the mp3 format as the choice of heathens, prefering vinyl myself). How wrong was I!

I can't stop listening to them now and my ears hurt and I'm tired :(

I think you should have gone for the AKG K240 :o

But if you're happy with your purchase then that's awesome :D
Welcome to the world of proper headphones

If I had the cash....

The HP1's are better than the K141's anyway, just never been able to hook them up to the PC. Dare I say that they're probably better than the 240's too!

Got a feeling eating nothing but tesco's corn flakes with water 3 times a day for the rest of the month is gonna get old realllllly fast

I know the feeling :( :D

They look well funky! I have a pair of senhheisers HD25's (for mixing on) but the sound from them is awwwwesome. The difference is quite amazing compared to my last ones, it makes things like a whole new experience when you get a decent set :D

Blasphemy! The K240s are ubiquitous in studios across the world for a reason :o

:p

The HP-1's cost more in 1976 than the K240s do now

Theoretically, you can actually run them straight from an amplifiers speaker outputs. They'll take upto 10W (which may be one of the reasons that they never were ubiquitous in studios around the world)!

MP3s sound "OK" but they're still the spawn of satan for the masses. OK in the same way 700mb AVIs are "OK". Compared to a porperly encoded FLAC file or DVD they suck though :)

I did a back to back comparison between the Yamaha HP-1s and the AKG K141s last night through my Naim CD3.5 and my hot rodded turntable. The Yamaha's utterly destroy the K141s, which did surprise me a little. I thought the AKGs sounded good (well, they do), but the HP-1s just sounded better.

The K141s have firmer bass, but sounded so closed in compared to the Yamahas I couldn't believe it! The soundstage the Yammies produce is far more open and detailed, but the bass is a bit limp. I put that down to the fact that they were only running from an inadequately powered headphone socket and not a dedicated amp. Interesting...
