Evening all,

Looking for your advice surround what car to get next for my daily commutes to work.

Currently Have a Nissan Almera 1.5 2004 which is doing roughly 400 miles per 60 quid fill which has been good for the past 4 years!

Looking for somthing newer and a lot quieter if possible and give me better MPG. Here are a few stats:

  • Budget - 5k -> 10k
  • Annual Milage: 20k
  • Journey Type: 90% Motorway/Bypass (50mph+)
  • Ideally a lower Insurance group, as I've been naughty in the past

Let me know if you have any further questions, and thank you in advance!

Audi A4...

This is a 'Recommend the OP a car' thread not a 'Blindly post what you drive with no further comment' thread.

Pointless buying an Audi A4 unless he particularly wants an Audi, for those who simply want a decent economical commuter there are many better choices, some of which are very similar cars to the A4. Stay away from prestige stuff unless nothing else will do.

Skoda Superb/Octavia, VW Golf/Bora, Mondeo, Focus, etc - all better choices for Mr Normal to commute in. Cheaper to buy so newer and lower mileage for the budget, cheaper to maintain and buy tyres for, etc.

Thanks for the advice so far.

I've had the recommendation from a friend about a 2008 Golf Diesel Bluemotion, but they seem tricky to get hold of north of the border.

If it's the 1.6 tdi it's pretty horrific to drive - by all means try one but I find them unbearable. You aren't getting a bad return from your almera by any means - I take it you're just bored of it?

Weren't there a few threads where people were picking up VW Jettas for silly low prices? If I had to spend 90% of 20000 miles on the motorway, a Jetta would seem like a decent choice if you found the right one.

I'd definitely go for a MkIV Mondeo. They are massive and comfy, great for covering fairly high mileage. They're an absolute bargain imo.

Sounds like the main reason you are changing your car is for more mpg, that is a false economy. Spending thousands to get more mpg is silly.

If your Almera has been good for the past four years doing 80k in that time then why not just run it until it breaks and then move on?

In that time you can save for a better motor, as a large 5k diesel could potentially throw some large bills at you.

Or is it that you just want a new car?

Yes I saw that I just wanted clarification, as a lot of people these days seem to be moving over to diesel to save money, when it is actually costing them more.

:) There is also a bit of vanity Involved I'm afraid. The Almera has a few knocks in it and it's Baby **** green so I feel it's just showing it's age now regardless of how it's performing.

Seen a Kia Ceed Diesel 08 model locally for 7k - Anyone have an experience of the Ceed's?

Do you have any Autotrader examples of such models? I'm in the Glasgow area if there's anything there you could spy.

The only thing I'd recommend is to try and get a mondeo with the darker dash - that silver one looks particularly cheap and nasty when you're actually in the car

Isn't that standard for OCUK spec me threads though?

And OP; you need a Focus ST225 ;)

These are my best finds at the moment ranging from 6k to 8k - All 2008 models.

http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201231480757542 Appears to be my best bet at the moment for it's price, but the Interior of http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201226476903797 looks a lot better (and 1 Insurance group down) - Just depends if I can get the price down on it or not.

What do you think?
